With president-elect Barack Obama soon to be sworn in as the nation’s leader, a new presidential limousine was in call for and once again General Motors was assigned the task of building it. Nicknamed ‘The Beast’, the limo is based on a number of GM platforms and shares components with several different vehicles.

Its exterior is styled around the Cadillac DTS but underneath the sheet-metal the vehicle is built on a medium-duty truck chassis. The limo has recently been seen testing in prototype form alongside several GMC Topkick pickups, and according to onlookers the wheels and tires on the limo are almost identical to those on the trucks – 19.5in Goodyear Regional RHS tires.

The rest of the exterior includes parts from several Cadillac models, such as headlights from an Escalade, and the grille and taillights from an STS. The panels are comprised of dual-hardness steel, aluminum, titanium and ceramic material to help break up projectiles aimed at the car.

Other safety and high-tech features include 8in thick armor-plated doors (each weighing the same as a cabin door on a Boeing 757), an independent oxygen supply and advanced fire-fighting system located in the boot, pump-action shotguns, night-vision cameras and tear-gas cannons, Obama’s own personal storage of blood, Kevlar-reinforced tires that are puncture and shred-resistant, and special steel wheels that can drive without the tire attached.

All of this comes at a heavy weight penalty, with top speed rated at 60mph and fuel-economy expected to be about 8mpg.

Obama will first use the limo when he travels along Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington after his inauguration.

You just have to make them as thick as Woody Allen's glasses, and you're good to go.

Diesel is better for a heavy vehicle.
The fuel is a lot less flamable.

And of course diesel is a lot easier to find in foreign countries and the quality of fuel isn't as critical as it is with petrol.

I think it would be difficult to get through 8" doors, or even titainium/ceramic/re-enforced steel shell.

With top speed of 60mph and 0-60 of 15, how do they intend to escape their killers driving even a Lada? Now it's just missing a outlet for creating an oil slick behind the car, something to make it jump, and a grappling hook for some intense cornering.

I see at least one other person finds it odd that at the very least the article writers think that the President should stop and pay tolls..

"Mr. President, do you have change for a twenty? Sorry, but that's all the ATM gave me this morning, and this guy wants exact change.."

I think they expect that any attack will be hit and run. So it's more important to have the car withstand a large initial blast than to be nimble and quick.

Plus it's backed up by this:

:werd:

I think its more about the car being tough enough to withstand a few hits or what ever and then by that time back up has been called in or what ever.

Sweet limo though.

Diesel won't blow up from being shot at. You could drop a lit match in a bucket of diesel and nothing will happen. It only combusts under extreme pressure.

Gasoline also won't explode from bulletfire..... it's been mythbusted.

i was referring to the picture that has all the safety equipment and it says that they have special foam to prevent an explosion from the tank, but oxygen can explode yet no steps were taken for that, seems odd they would even bother with the fuel tank

Technically, oxygen doesn't explode on its own either, but it does help things that are burning or exploding do so with added enthusiasm. The fuel tank foam is probably there to act more as a sealant if the tank is punctured rather than a fireproofing remedy. Self-sealing fuel tanks were used in WWII fighter aircraft as well, so this isn't a new innovation.

Wow that personal supply of blood idea is pretty good. Also like others said, I think they designed it to be more of a tank than a running machine. Next you'll see them create an iron man like suit for him =P
