We are trying to upgrade the ram in my friends older Sony VGN-fs740 laptop, once we put in the new ram it will not boot up but if we put the old one back in it does boot up. The ram is the same PC2-3200 DDR2

are you sure you have the correct ram?
does it beep when you try and boot it?

with some computers you need the same ram in both ports in order for it to run, as in you can't have 1gb in one slot and 512mb in the other

Leave the old one out and new one in or try removing the battery for a full system reset.

Maybe the motherboard itself cannot support that much ram (however much your putting in it right now). If it's limitation is 2gb, try putting in just 2gb and not exceed that.

Put the old ram back and boot.

If it boots than its bad ram or not supported.

Double check that its pushed in. Nothing on the new rams pins.

Does the fan turn on?

well according to this page

your laptop doesn't support 1gb pieces

you would need two 512mb pieces to equal 1gb most likely

but that's going out on a limb since i can't find any real spec sheets for the computer

According to Kingston it should.

http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator_new/modelsinfo.asp?id=1&SysID=25728&mfr=Sony&model=VAIO+VGN&root=us&LinkBack=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kingston.com&Sys=25728-Sony-VAIO+VGN-FS740%2FW&distributor=0&submit1=Search

1GB x 2 for 2GB max.

If Kingston is right, you got the wrong speed. It should be PC2-4200 or DDR2-533. Not PC2-3200.

PC should still turn on though? I put the wrong ram in my PC and it started, but it was really really sluggish.

The laptop only supports 1Gb in the form of 2 x 512Mb chips. It does not recognize a 1Gb chip.
