CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE
-----------------------------------------------------------------

In the late evening hours on Thursday January 15 2009 three
masked and armed men confronted a homeowner in the 1200 block
of Riverdale Avenue SW and proceeded to hold the homeowner,
his 18 year old son and four other males also about 18 years
of age hostage.

In the early hours of Friday January 16 2009 two of the
suspects took the homeowner to his place of business, a
jewellery store in the 900 block of 17 Avenue SW and
committed robbery of an unknown magnitude. When the suspects
completed the offence they released the store owner.

The third suspect is alleged to have remained at the house on
Riverdale Avenue where the remaining five hostages were being
held.

Police were contacted shortly after the homeowner/business
owner was released and at that point learned about the
remaining hostages.

Officers responded to the Riverdale Avenue home and contain
ed the scene awaiting the arrival of TAC members and
Negotiators.

When TAC members and negotiators were in position a tactical
entry was made into the residence. Five people were found
inside, all males 18 to 20 years old. Some of these persons
were found still bound and tied. An on scene medic from EMS
determined that none of the victims sustained any physical
injury. All of the victims were transported to the Robbery
Unit officer for interviews.

The incident has been assigned to the Robbery Unit for
investigation and at this time police have no suspects in
custody.

Further information will be released by Robbery Unit
investigators when available

I can't read that without thinking of the Simpsons scene where the Archie gang kicks Homer out of the jalopy and Moose says "Duuuuh, and stay outta Riverdale!". Crazy story though.

All business owners need to be more careful... But that being said, you can't really prepare for something like this.

Silent alarm would have been a good idea to have at the store, hit the wrong code on the alarm system and before the guy has a handfull of goods CPS will be finishing the coffee, and headed to the store, but not untill they issue a couple tint tickets on the way

On Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at 10:37 a.m., a male culprit
entered the First Calgary Savings and Credit Union located at

"inside job" as in the mastermind behind all this could be the owner himself. Pretend to get robbed and claim insurance. Sell his own stolen goods else where for cheap. Double win. Always a possibility.

It's the place next to the TD bank.

When I was living in the area there was an asian couple that ran that store.

Youre right, Richmond is pretty quiet as far as the Lower Mainland region goes - besides the odd street race that is.

It's not the place next to the TD bank. It is the jewellery shop located in the Devenish building on 17th & 8th.
