It is hardly the boy racer's vehicle of choice.

About 14 years old and with 130,000 miles on the clock, the Honda Civic driven by Dale Lyle was barely capable of reaching the speed limit.

So when he received a ticket for apparently driving at almost 100mph on the motorway, he told magistrates the mobile speed camera must have got it wrong.

Prove it, they said. He did . . . but it wasn't easy.
Guy bought his car back, got an independent speed test done and showed it to the court to get the ticket reversed.

He intends to return to court to seek compensation for the £1,200 he spent proving his innocence. Good luck buddy. If he gets his money back, I'm moving to the UK.

If he sold it to a friend, I don't understand why the friend simply didn't allow it to be tested while still retaining ownership...

A pyrrhic victory for the little guy I suppose...

Then again I dont think he could grab a set in the UK...and it was a civic and not a cavalier...

Good for him. Would be nice if that were to become a precedent setting case for motorists in the UK. I'm assuming they really cash in over there by ticketing everyone in the picture, thereby collecting 3 times for 1 infraction? Weak.

I thought it was.

This story would have been better if it was some guy who caused an accident and bought the other guys car on the spot to avoid a ticket somehow.

How hard would it have been for him to swap out the engine before the independent test?

Buy car, remove b18c-r, install D13, run independent test.

Good for him, holy moly.

Now how do THEY prove he was doing a certain speed if the vehicle could actually do that speed? Interesting!

the smart thing to do is tell the court you had to buy it back, even if he did or didnt he can now claim this in court so he can recieve a greater settlement.

Why couldnt he borrow the car (or 'rent' for the day) and just do the speed test that way?

uh..no, officer. Lying in court for $1200 isn't worth it.

Speed cameras in the UK have to take 2 photos of the vehicle speeding to support conviction... So why were they unable to compare the two photos and note any slight differences between the 3 vehicles to see which is driving faster? Speed limits are terrible. Just big government holding the little guy down!

uh..no lawyer. proving perjury in this case is going to be really difficult, all the guys needs is a bill of sale. its going to be hard for the court to say "even with this bill of sale we still dont think you purchased the vehicle"

i agree with it not being worth it, but i am just stating what the reasonable "kid" would do, and would probably get away with it.

Thats weird, i know for a fact that a Civic hatch with a 1.5L Vtec can hit 220kph without much issue.

And we're talking about a single cam, likely carbureted D13... 75HP.
