Thinking of picking up my first bike for summer and looking for ideas.

I don't want a sportbike, looking more for a "harley style" bike without having to get a harley if possilbe (really don't like them) and without it being covered in disgusting chrome.

What's out there to consider? I really know nothing about them.

This is the type of look I prefer for reference if that helps at all.

Any input is appreciated.

A Harley doesn't have to be a chrome covered cheese machine

As someone else mentioned Triumph makes some nice cruiser style bikes.

You could pick up a used nightster for about $8,000.

OP if you dont want to fork up the $ for a harley, I would look into Triumphs they are nice bikes for the price. If you like the chopper look Honda is coming out with a new bike called the Fury that is starting at $11000 i believe. Its not bad at all and totally new concept for honda in my opinion.

WOW. HOnda really does pioneer amazing new concepts. I'd still like to get my hands on a Honda Rune. But when they were new I didn't have $27k burning a hole in my back pocket just for a bike:nut:

Yamaha VMax? Probably the only cruiser i'll ever get.

Its spendy, but it also isn't every lawyers wet dream, like a HD.

NVM, you said between 5 -10k. Blame it on the '08-ness.

You should look into the new M90, seems like its going to be sweet however I think it may be slightly over your limit of 10K. Not sure if the bike is actually out yet. Vulcan 900 customs are also nice and within your range.

My personal fave:

Here is a pic of the 09 VN900 SE

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b268/explorerroller/custom.jpg

The engine is fuel injected and liquid cooled. Its also belt driven, you can get the bike to about 170 before the motor starts screaming.

There is also the Yamaha V-Star 1100 Custom.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b268/explorerroller/custom11.jpg
The Yamaha is air-cooled carbureted and shaft driven.

Opinions on this one anyone?

http://www.yamaha-motor.ca/products/products.php?color=BK&model=2989&group=M#contentTop

For all the things listed so far, those in the know could add their pro's and con's please.

^that bike is a good choice as well, being the first year that the vstar is actually in the midsize level. Before I believe they only made 650 (which is too small) and 1300 which is pretty big if its your first bike. The nice thing is that its fuel injected, although this seems to be standard on most bikes I bought a shadow 750 only to find out its carburated and didn't have a fuel gauge. I still love it, seeing how I'm just learning to ride, but those are some obvious things to look out for.

Other than that, in this price range I don't think you will find too many pro's and cons since they are all pretty much the same, you should go sit on them and see which one feels the best...thats how I ended up deciding.

For the Road star Midnight warrior, cruiser with R1 derived suspension set up. You get the low end grunt of a cruiser with sport handling characteristics.

GorG
01-28-2009, 05:25 PM
950s are pretty good bikes the pros of the bike is that its fuel injected and belt driven. Belts have to be adjusted at 1000km and then they are good for quite a while. The valves on the bike don't have to be adjusted until 24000KM. The only bike con of the bike that I can think of is that it is air-cooled. It doesn't make a whole lot of difference in Alberta but if your planning to run the bike in a hotter state like Nevada. But yeah like rony was saying do your research but in the end sit on the bikes and see which one you feel more comfortable on, it will build confidence and you'll enjoy the bike more.

Fury's sell for 18 and have only been out 1 year so hard to find a used one.

I would look at a Kawi mean streak.

Congrats on the *new* pick-up.

It's pretty sweet, the deal's not sealed yet but we both want to make it happen. I want to pay him fair for what he's done and he wants to sell it to someone who will appreciate the work put in and not just throw it all back to stock so i'm confident we'll find a happy ground this week and I can take it home.

He isn't trying to actively sell it but will to the right person and I think that's me!

It's a 2007 yamaha vstar 1100 custom. He bought it new, spent the winter modding it to that then bought a harley and never rode it again lol. It's only got 3000 KM on it, pretty much still a brand new bike.

lolz at that, I'd love to see you tell the guys who built it they're not "real" bikers :nut: What does it take to be a "real" biker anyways?

But, to each their own right? I personally have no interest in dealing with a Harley, or in riding one.

You're right! Something along the lines of "I phucked all this money away purely on image".

One of my favourite sayings - Harley Davidson, over 100 years of converting gasoline to noise without the unpleasant byproduct of horsepower.

Okay, that wasn't very nice of me. I'm just not a fan of HD. The brand seems to draw a large number of posers that know nothing about bikes.

Hey Scottie, If I were you I'd look at year end clearance models, as you can get some wicked deals, still even.
Kind of pointless buying a "latest technology" 2010 cruiser, as they never really change. Just new models & colors. :dunno:
Big deal. I was at Pro-am, and they had a BEAUTIFUL Kawi - meanstreak, chopper/bobber style with flat black paint and whitewall tires. Looked frickin' badass... I was amazed THAT came from a Jap bike manufacturer.
I think it was an '08 model (This was last year) for $8500 new.

Hey if you're ever in C-town and want to go bike shopping give me a ring. I'd be more then happy to help you pick out a decent used one too if you wanted to go that route. :dunno:

But yeah if I were to buy a new bike, I think Honda has a few incredible products out there.

^ LMAO, I'd be hard pressed to agree with you more.
I can't help but laugh at my old harley-nut co-worker.
Funny how hopelessly easy I could school him with his 125"/2047cc Harley, only I was on my '89 RZ350...... a 34hp bike.
...so he paid $40k for his bike... that burns oil since the day its new, and rattled itself apart thanks to its splended choice of V-cylinder angle, lack of counter balancers, & crank design. Way to go Harley! Way to lead with tradition.

Bwahahahaha.. I never even read this post before.

Thanks for the divine enlightenment that because I was clever enough to do some research & number crunching: that I'm not a real biker. Hey would you be interested in taking your "real bike" to Race city this spring to do a few laps? or comparing notes of ANY kind? I earnestly feel I have a lot to learn from a real biker such as yourself, or any of the other Harley riders out there. ;) :D :D

here I'll be nice, even though my bike is half the displacement as the average "real bike", if you ever want to race for $$ or even pink slips let me know. Learning is priceless, is it not?

I loved those bikes when I was a kid, but they have a terribly sorted frame, and even worse brakes.

Nice to have a 140hp bike, not so much one that has remarkably difficulty slowing down, or handling at speed.
That bike hasn't changed between 2008 from its 1985 model, besides Fuel injection I mean. :thumbsdow
The 1984 (debut) model had incessant issues with its butterfly valves, later corrected for the 1985 model year.
