I would pick one up in a heart beat

By the rumored picture, id say

9-10" monitor

Thin as hell (keyboard as thin as it is currently on the Imac)
LED screen
Maybe a 40GB SSD drive
iDisk or what ever it is, to connect wirelessly in order to use a cd rom

Since i already have an imac, i would get this to just surf the net and kepp an eye on the stock market

Yeah I've heard tons of rumors flying around... the OP made it sound a little like it was a certainty...

That being said, I wonder if this will compete with the MacBook air in the ultraportable market...

Cook also continued to downplay Apple's interest in the "netbook" market:

We're watching that space, but from our [point of view] the products are based on hardware that's much less powerful, software technology that's not good, cramped displays. We don't think that people are going to be pleased with those type of products. It's a category we watch, we have some ideas here, but we think the products there now are inferior and won't provide the kind of experience people want.
This wait-and-see attitude mirrors comments by Steve Jobs from the last financial results conference call in October.

I doubt it at this point, article from today:

http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2009/01/apple-still-thi.html

And this article as well:

The stumbling block to such a strategy -- which Gottheil also sees as a way for Apple to play in emerging markets, where the bulk of computer sales growth has occurred -- is that a lower-priced notebook will cannibalize sales of the current MacBook. "That's the only reason not to create this thing," he said.

:dunno:

This statement makes absolutely no sense... why would Apple build a product to compete with their own product.

that being said, this Apple netbook is still a rumour, and that pic is obviously a photoshop...

If Apple came out with a smaller notebook, I would get it for sure...

Why? Is a MB, MB Air or MB Pro SOOOOOOO cumbersome that one feels the need to squint like a 90yr old at a 9" screen?

Mini computers are gay.

Agreed. It seems that some people get them for the attention factor. The portability of my MB is great (I bring it to work/school daily) and it's still fully featured enough and with a large enough display to be usable. I wouldn't want to go any smaller.

The only benefit I would find is that due to the size it would be really portable for me which would come in handy, what I would like just a device to slip an ipod touch into that has a keyboard at the bottom so you could use the whole screen at all times on it when browsing, would come in handy.

Apple netbook is pointless. They already have the iPhone.

iPhone FTW!

"netbooks" have been around for a long time. This is just a new word coined for them. I think they are too small to use personally.

These existed back in the day with the Toshiba Libretto (sp?) I think it was called.

i actually really like the mbp's as i've owned one before but the bulk and battery life killed it for me

i'm not gaming or doing hardcore video editing on the road, but i do need the portability and just enough power/juice to surf and create some pdfs. the netbooks do these tasks quite nicely

you don't really have to squint on a 10" imo

Netbooks are where its at IMO. When you come to think of it the only significant differences between a laptop and a netbook is the absense of an optical drive, different CPU (doesnt matter anyways for basic tasks), and smaller HD.

Having to lug around an optical drive is overrated, Ive learned this after many many years owning different kinds and sizes of laptops. I never watch movies on the go, and if I need to install programs, chances are I can just download it or if for some reason I need use a disc, I can now just use a flash drive to copy the contents over and onto the computer. Once you take the DVD drive out, it cuts the weight and size of your book by 1/5th if not more. Its one less moving part to have to worry about and pay extra for (when to me its just a waste of money).

Netbooks are in the $400 ballpark and IMO they fit the bill much better when describing what a portable computer is. Laptops are still portable but netbooks are much more portable and better suited for casual users.

I guess I find them pointless because my MB pro is perfect for travel IMO and the 15" screen is as small as I can stand. When it's at home I dock it to my 23" HD display and it has been my only computer since April '06, so I need the processing power and HD space.

Plus my iPhone gives me the ultraportable coverage.

I am waiting for the spring for my Mac Pro tower and then the MB pro will only be used for travel....

Apparently Apple might introduce a 15 Inch MacBook Air. Of course, I read that on Engadget (I think) so take that with a grain of salt.

Atleast there was no iPhone Nano introduced at Macworld this year.

No they won't release a 15" MB Air. There is no point.
