Beware the foam bandit

A "phantom" with a grudge is roaming the streets of Blenheim armed with tubes of expanding building foam, exacting revenge on "wide-mouthed" boy-racer style car exhausts.

In an anonymous letter sent to The Marlborough Express, the self-styled "Phantom Expander" said he or she was randomly targeting vehicles with wide exhausts and filling them with the expanding foam.

"I have taken it upon myself to respond to the socially maladjusted Blenheim pinheads that have chosen to have a wide-mouthed-boy-racer exhaust installed on their car," the letter said.

The writer said in the letter received late last week that eight vehicles had already been targeted.

Blenheim dispensary optician Anna Gellatly fell victim to the foam bandit yesterday.

Miss Gellatly had parked her car on Henry St between George St and Maxwell Rd while she worked in town. The foamed exhaust had been spotted by The Marlborough Express who tracked Miss Gellatly down at work to tell her about it and the letter.

Miss Gellatly said she was nothing like a "boy racer", despite her car looking like a "boy racer" car.

"For starters, that person doesn't even know who I am or how I drive as I don't drive like a boy racer, and it's not one of those cars.

"It's not even a very big exhaust and the car is not noisy.

"This is nothing but straight-out vandalism."

She said she bought the gold 1992 Honda Civic in a private sale in Christchurch less than two months ago as she had needed a car.

"It was cheap and I'd had a Honda before and I knew they were good cars so I bought it.

"It wasn't because of how it looks or anything like that."

Miss Gellatly said she had managed to pull out the majority of the foam before driving away, and the rest blew out.

She was thankful it had not completely set.

Expanding building foam takes 15 to 30 minutes to become tack-free and about four hours to set.

Blenheim Police constable Michelle Stagg said police had received four complaints of "foamings", but as yet no charges had been laid as the car owners were able to clear out the foam before it dried.

Victims included a Marlborough District Council employee and a police officer, Ms Stagg said.

"Police do not like to see people taking matters into their own hands and it can lead to them being arrested themselves," she warned.

Ms Stagg said the foam bandit could face charges of wilful damage and disorderly behaviour, and possibly the more serious unlawful interference with a motor vehicle.

Murray's Mufflers owner Andrew Murray said foamed cars could leave owners with repair bills in the thousands of dollars.

The foam could cause head gaskets to blow or exhaust systems to break, he said.

Four cars that had fallen victim to foaming had so far been brought to his shop for repairs.

The worst-hit car had its exhaust system removed and the foam burnt out.

In the letter the phantom said the "public service" would continue until the "inadequate nobheads get the message".

The writer advised owners of "wide-mouthed blower[s]" to ditch them otherwise their turn would come.

"It may not happen tomorrow, next week, or next month, but it will happen. Enjoy!", the letter said.

Hero or not, it's still vandalism. Now if he was filling the exhausts of Bully Dog tuned diesels.....

hahaha wow! If this were to happen here, we would have a shortage of foam for months

hopefully this doesn't happen here.

That guy can't expect to "make a point" if he's just randomly targetting fart cans. How does he know how loud the exhaust is, or how the person that owns the car drives. I mean, if he was filling up the exhausts of people that he knows regularly drive like jackasses, it would be different.

My guess is this guy has a couple of ricers that drive by his house on a regular basis driving like idiots. He's had enough and he's going to make a mess of anything with a fart can.

To be honest, I'm kind of surprised it doesn't happen more often. I don't know anyone other than the 17 year old kid that thinks these things are cool. BTW, if you are the guy that thinks it's cool that you $5000 shitbox is loud, everyone else thinks you're a knob!

:D

Edit:

I'll put anyone in a truck with a loud exhaust in the same boat.

It doesnt really matter how you drive with those fart cans.

They are overly loud and not really useful at all.

I dont support what this guy is doing, Im just another person that constantly has to hear the lawnmowers racing around.

So are Ram 2500 Cummins Turbo Diesels in the city. That doesn't mean someone has the right to vandalize them. Just because most truck drivers around here DO drive like jackasses doesn't mean I feel like I have the right to deface something that isn't mine.

Not calling you out, I understand you aren't condoning his actions, just saying.

Sounds to me like he got butthurt and decided the entire universe was all about him and if he didn't like something, it had to get off of "his streets"

Even at low speeds, it sounds like they are going a million miles per hour, and it is just silly.

Is it just me or has the # of fart cans in Calgary slowly gone down over the years???

Peak activity was in like 2000-2003/4 IMO but I've noticed a steady decline in the number of flatuating vehicles that annoy the shit out of everyone. Either that or I've just gotten used to it and blocked them out....

He likely got spanked by a "rice rocket"
he is exacting revenge from what he remembers of the car

Spanked is questionable. I have yet to see a fart can equipped vehicle make more speed than noise when the driver floors it.

It's quite amusing - the down-shift fly-by that doesn't go any where, but makes a lot of noise... but while funny, I could do without...

Umm....there are quite a few "fart can" cars in this city that are pretty damn fast.

There are a lot more, however, that are quite slow. Does this mean that everyone with an exhaust on their car should be punished, regardless of what car it's on / who's driving it?

Villain. As much as I dislike the drone of a fart cannon from several blocks away in the middle of the night - I don't think anyone should be vandalizing others property...

I could tell you that if i were to come out and someone was dicking around my car doing something like that, they would not remeber who they were after i was done with them. I hate overly loud exhaust; but the fact of the matter is this person is messing around with other peoples cars/property so I just hope someone catches him in the act and gives him a fist in the face or a gun to the head cause that shit aint right. I say its just some homo that has got to much time, to go around messing with other peoples stuff. I think this certain someone needs to get laid or get a hobby by the sounds of it.

Agreed. There are other ways of getting rid of fart cans through legal methods. Sure its slow but this guys way is just vandalism.

I agree. This guy likes being a vigilante, he might meet another vigilante who thinks he is the criminal and spray foams his exhaust, haha.

im tired of the ractive canadian tire exhausts and the 40$ cherry bombs, i can deff appreciate a nice deep tone from a full header/exhaust set up, but if you dont wanna spend the money to do it right, DONT DO IT AT ALL

a fart can is a fart can. a exhaust is totally differant. one sounds like shit, one sounds good, and sadly you can't tell by looking at the tip in a parking lot. sometimes there obvious sometimes there not. randomly filling them with foam is a recipe for a beating. I hate harleys with no exhaust and pipes shaped like megaphones, does that give me the right to weld them shut??

What are you saying? So because it's an old car I can't care about it? It was about 4 years ago.
