Only in Canada would something as disgusting as this stand. In the latest case the 13 year old asked a adult for a cigarette on the sky train. Like any sane adult he said no so the kid slashed him. Turns out the kid has 75 prior run ins.

You can thank every bleeding heart party for the hold ups in revising the Youth Criminal Act.

A 13 year old with 75 convictions is obviously a rare incident.

I agree though... the young offender's act needs some serious overhauling, but I think the aim should still be on rehabilitation than retribution.

If you take some 13 year old and lock him up in juvie until he's 18 and throw him back on to the streets it's just a matter of time before you'll need to throw him into a real prison for most if not all of his life.

While this would keep him off the streets, it costs taxpayers money keeping him behind bars for the majority of his life. If there is a way to turn him into a productive member of society it would be better for everyone...

Of course, that's not always the case... I mean, this 13 year old is a prime candidate for someone that probably won't be rehabilitated.

What surprises me is that conservatives, who are traditionally very keen on how their tax money is spent, are so gung-ho about just throwing any and all young offenders in jail when studies have shown that all it does is open them to a life of hard crime, more jail time, and more tax money spent.

No but I doubt that guy just told the kid no. Probably had to be a tough guy and tell the kid to fuck off or something. Than the kid cut him.

The YCJA works well for the 90% of youth that make a bad decision and have a run-in with the law, such as shop lifting and other minor offenses and they have strong parents that take control of the situation.

The other 10% the act is toothless and they run rampant over the system and they do not get punishment for they actions. Rehabilitation does not work for some, they simply do not care to change. They enjoy being a bad ass criminal and use the system to their advantage.

The only highlight is that I have seen a few that thought they were absolute king shit then they turned 18 and got sent to Remand for the first time and they re-educated by the other inmates on who is really tough.

its actually not 75 criminal convictions, but 75 run ins which doesnt really mean too much. 1 conviction is worse than 75 run ins with no convictions.
