lol funny, the old lady at this stall specifically said 'chew the head thoroughly because it might get stuck in your throat', i think she was specifically talking to my little brother.

Okay? lol

They really aren't that bad. I would say if I was to try them unknowingly it would just be like a crunchy chocolate.

One girl puked after I told her... then I just left the tray sitting in the break room for whomever, and they were gone by the end of the day so :dunno:

As nasty as that looks, bugs actually are actually more healthier than a lot of the food we eat. They contain almost no fat and are high in protein, calcium, and vitamins.

Not that that'd make me want to down a spoonful of grubs!

I find it funny that we find these to be delicacies but gag at the above pictures

Good point. These little buggers are ugly and delicious as well:

But for some reason I never find them as tasty when they are served with the head and legs still on. Funny how your brain does that.

It does taste better when it's fully intact! Especially if you just fry 'em up in garlic...

The juices on the head are just delish!

... But that's just me. :D

Yeah, I have a mental block about lobster and shrimp, I never seem to find them appetizing.
They are just bugs of the sea.

I always thought lobsters looked similar to insects, which is why I never really enjoy it whole. I prefer just tails/claws/cut up etc.

Crab and shrimp are delicious. And for some reason they don't bother me.

I'll stick to my Salmon Sashimi

Your loss, my gain. I guessed I learned how tasty lobsters and shrimps are before I could tell they are ugly. Now I have a mental block to find them ugly.

Bugs are even harder to accept since most of them live in shit and garbage in urban area so that's not very appealing to begin with. I might try the meat only though. I mean I don't eat the whole lobster/shrimp with the shell neither.

Another question is that do they change colour when they are cooked?

Eating bugs and slugs isn't that bad. I've done the whole bug munching thing before, it's really just getting your brain to accept that it's food, and not something creepy crawly. And, the thing is, if I were stuck in the back country, with no food other than grubs living under a rock, it's gonna be one REALLY bad day for those grubs o_O

On the subject of it not being a survival situation, I've still had chocolate crickets, deep fried ants, full shrimps (head on and everything), live grasshopper. It's seriously not all that nasty, as was stated above... it's more of a mind over matter deal :)

Tamilok or woodworms as they are called, are quite a delicacy in the Philippines. They just hack through driftwood and eat it alive!

It's actually quite clean because it just eats wood. :)

And lobsters are overrated; you pay for the shell, claws and the tail. Not much meat in the body and the head. Crabs are a different story as its full of meat!

go to mexico and get some Chapuline (grasshopper) taco's, people freak when they hear you order.

They are crispy and delicious.

Some how I don't think Taco Bell will ever have these!

I remember my grandpa told me that when they had a locust infestation in Philippines, they just ate locust all day on BBQ sticks because the locust had eaten all the crops.

Dude, bugs are delicious. If you go to China you'd get to try a lot of crap. Deep fried cockroaches, scorpions, and such. Plus snakes are tasty too. Just try to shove the thing down your throat before you ask what it is.

back home they dont do bugs/insects, instead they do cow and lamb. that may seem normal, until u hear them talking about the lamb(?) testicles they had the other day and sheep head and stuff like that. kinda weird...

When we travel it's a don't ask don't tell until we are done policy.

So many things are delicious if you just try them. I do have my limits like everyone but if it doesn't smell repulsive then I am game same with my husband. How we ended up with a child that likes nothing but chicken and potatoes is beyond me.

I have a very strong gag reflex but I don't have any texture issues. Though I am not sure I would pop a goat eye in my mouth anytime soon.

The snack of choice at little bars in Laos was crickets deep-fried with hot peppers and lemongrass, surprisingly delicious with beer!

I find the opposite...lobster bodies actually have quite a bit of meat hidden in there where the legs connect to the body. I think eating crab has less meat. I don't even bother with crab now but I do buy lobsters sometimes especially when they were on sale the last few months for 4.99/lb

When you get hardcore that green stuff inside tastes pretty good too!

Lamb/sheep testicles are actually REALLY tasty when roasted with the lamb in a ground oven or over a fire. Very light texture, tastes like a kind of unwound lamb sausage

(and no genitalia jokes <_< :nut: )

But the whole crab itself is ALL meat; the body is full of joint muscle, brain matter, fat... Dungeness Crab that is and not those stupid King Crabs.

And for sure I'll buy lobster when it's cheap, but I feel like you get more bang for your buck with crab.

Staying on topic, anyone ever had Prairie Oysters? If so, where? I'm curious as to what it would taste like.

Vagabond142
02-10-2009, 10:44 AM
I had prairie oysters waaaaaaaaaay back... like mid 90's. Don't remember where. As to taste, it's kind of like a weird (in a good way) tasting veal if cooked right.

Kritafo

Prairie Oysters, it depends on the age of the bull. But if they are breaded and deep fried like most, you wouldn't even question what they are.

Again this is a food people cringe at because they have been told what they are.
