My first question to all those salt water fish enthusiasts. When purchasing a skimmer do you take into account the size of the tank and the sump. or just the amount of gallons in the tank.
My second question, is regarding t5 lights, how do you determine how much light power do you need for soft corals in a 90 gallon tank.

You should account for the total water volume, since the water in your sump is also "dirty". I would go for 4 bulbs, that way when you decide to get some more light demanding corals you won't have to upgrade.

Skimmer purchase should be based on total water volume and how heavy the bio-load in the tank is going to be.

If you are planning a softie tank you should be ok with a 4bulb T5 unit... 4bulb will not be enough for an SPS tank, that will require a 6bulb with individual reflectors for each bulb at least.

If you plan on upgrading go with the 6 bulbs to begin with... trust me you will save money in the long run.
