I am buying a 04 ES330. According to the manual, it will run on 87 regular gas. Is that realistic? Anyone try it? THX

You think your manual is lying to you?

ES = Camry = 87 ok

Xtrema, I am not saying the manual is lying but it says the car will run on 87 but recommends 91 and most other cars in this class (Maxima, GX35, Acura TL, and etc) uses premium gas. So I was wondering what the real situation is when the car is actually running on 87 gas. THX

Run what is recommended in the Manual.

Don't be cheap.

People think premium is sooooo much more expensive.

10 cents over a 60 Liter tank is.... 6 bucks more a tank! wop de do!

That is NOT the case. I always used 93 gas before. Unfortunately, I am working for a company with a strange gas reimbursement rule that forces me to use regular gas only :-( Hence I have to shop for a car that uses regular gas :-(((

91 is recommended, 87 may make the engine ping in very warm weather if you're beating the crap out of it.

If that happens the ECU will cut power to protect the engine.

With that said my grandmother has been pumping 87 in hers since 04 and has never had an issue. She is also 79, all depends how you want to drive it...

Ouch. On a serious note, you will be fine at this altitude.

What were you putting 93 into?

If the manual says 87 is okay then it will be okay. You will probably just give up 5-10hp so no big deal if this is mainly just a daily driver or work vehicle.

No, if the manual says 87, then 87 will make the most power. On a number of cars, if you put premium in, you actually lose power.

If your company will only pay for 87, pay the difference out of your own pocket.

^ the manual on the ES says it will run on both and some cars are programmed for both. Regular will just yeild less hp so premium is obviously better, but not necessary.

The Hyndia Genesis is another car like that. The 375hp is with premium which is recommended, but the manual says you can run regular and then it is something like 365hp.

I totally agree with you on when the manual recommends 87 you shouldn't put in premium, but this is not the same case.

*edit* The 3.3L V6 in the camry from the same years as the ES is the same way as well

It doesn't really make sense to compare by "class"... the other cars listed make considerably more hp for approximately the same engine size.

Much better comparison would be to the Camry of the same model year, which shares the same engine, making the same hp. Since the Camry recommends regular, I'd say you're fine with 87.

All of those cars will run on 87. You just don't get the power rating. There is no long term effect.

If that's what the companies pays, stick with 87. Just pick a grade and go with it. Switching back and forth is actually worse. Really, you're not going racing with a Camry. The 5-10hp doesn't really matter.

thank u for everyone is reply. I fear stemmed from the fact that I owed a 2002 Jetta 1.8T before and put 87 gas in it (where the manual recommended 91) and caused a $700 repair bill. Even though the manual says its ok with 87, I still just want to confirm. THX again for all your help.

Funny thing is I just droped my 3 series off at Edmonton BMW this morning for a service and they have two new girls working there and one of them "oooo your car is nice and shiney!" and I was like okay thanks, then the other one asked "so did you get the V6 or the V8?"

I had a good laugh though. Worst part is neither of them are even cute which would have at least made it better. lol

T = Turbo = 91 is a must. 87 is ok if you're stuck in a desert and that's the only gas you can get but not for prolong usage.

Recap

Turbo or Supercharger = 91

NA = any gas is ok.

You may want to reread the manual again, every site that has specs on the 1.8T say it needs premium (91).

Recap:

RTFM and don't listen to people on the internet. FI or NA does not determine the type of fuel used.
