Hey guys, thought I might as well post up what I have going on ATM.

Picked up a stock 99 hatch a few weeks ago and here's what I have so far.

DETAILS
1999 Civic Hatchback
150k kms
NO RUST  .. took me quite a while to find something with a good shell in my price range (MAX $4k.)
stock d16, 5spd

Since picking it up, I've got some Omni power full coilovers (thanks seanith  )
Skunk2 short shift
as well as a set of Rota Track R2's on order thanks to tirebob

Unsure of what to do under the hood.. suggestions/opinons are very welcome!

Pics!

When I first picked her up

After coilovers installed, when taking out old suspension I confirmed my suspicions of it having some lowering springs on it.
Unsure of what brand or anything, but they will be for sale, so if you are interested, PM me!

Hp/$ the B16a SIR II is your best bet, the B18C GSR is a close 2nd and would actually be my preference because of its greater torque.

Torque > Hp anyday for a daily driver.

Now that i've owned a few B series engines, i would say go with a B20Z. It has a lot more jam than a B16A, and the swap cost will end up being about the same.
The downside is, that you have to find a Integra tranny.

I'm with Deetz on the engine, that is probably what I will look at for next summer on my 97 coupe.

Clean car!

Well, after thinking about it a little, I've decided not to do a swap at the moment...
But I DO want to build up a SOHC.

In your guys opinions, what are some of the more simple upgrades that will give you a little more "zip"

I'm sure there's always I/H/E, but how about Intake manifold, cams, ect?

prudzzz
02-24-2009, 11:10 PM
i would advise boost and only boost on a SOHC. unless you are gutting your entire car, replacing parts with light weight parts, and wasting tons of money on your SOHC motor it is never going to be fast.

Deetz
02-24-2009, 11:13 PM
I have the same car as you. The sohc engine isn't all that great, and i'd question spending a wack of money trying to build it up. I think a swap is a better value for your hard earned dollars.

I went from this....

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/deetzcrx/Feb08015Medium.jpg

To this, for a decent sum

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y282/deetzcrx/Feb08036Medium.jpg

I can't begin to describe how much of a difference it is.

RotaryPower
02-25-2009, 03:39 AM
I'm not looking to make my civic "fast" by any means at all, but rather be a bit more peppy than just stock, and I'm not looking for high hp numbers, nor high dollar amounts (1000 absolute MAX) and I'm sure a swap and labour would be twice, if not 3 times that. That being said.. If someone can find me a b18/b20 complete swap+labour for under 1000 let me know. :P

I hear that even with a stock d series, a new intake manifold can make a noticible difference.. Not sure how accurate my sources are though :dunno:

if anyone can shed some light on this that would be great

On another topic I purchased a set of blox LCA's which should be here next week sometime, as well as got my s2 short shift installed on the weekend :)

Mr_ET
02-25-2009, 10:19 AM
With $1000 spent on the y7 you can do intake header and exhaust and it will probably gain about 7-10whp and feel slightly peppier in the higher RPM range.

For the same amount if you can do the swap yourself you could probably throw in a d16y8, an ebay intake with k&n filter, an ebay header and probably gain about 15-20whp.

In the world of Hondas $1000 won't do much for performance.

78si
02-25-2009, 12:33 PM
The Y7 is the worst engine Honda ever built. If I had to run a y7 I would :
Run a SI tranny
convert to obd1 (po6 ecu)
use a Y8 intake/exhaust manifold
Y8 injectors
if your really bored - Y8 head and a p28 ecu.

Most of the above is free at your old High School. I bet we could almost get a b series in for $1000, but you would need to spend some time at pick your part.

RotaryPower
02-25-2009, 01:00 PM
Hm, maybe I have to do some more thinking then... that or win the lottery :poosie:

Deetz
02-25-2009, 01:26 PM
Also, maybe consider looking for the newer gen dohc zc. Its a d series and will bolt up to your existing tranny. That engine is easily under $1000, and makes about 130hp and much more torque than a single cam.

It's not uncommon to pick up gas mileage with it as well, being the engine doesn't have to work as hard to get up to speed.

If you would have said this 2 weeks ago i could have sold you a full b18b swap for $700 other than a tranny. Sold it to someone else though. The motor was actually in great condition too, not some dud.

A "little" more pep:

basics: I/H/E

moderate on a budget:
-z6 head and Y8 intake manifold
-Comp cams 59300 camshaft (awesome bang for your buck)
-OBD1 conversion with chipped P28

If you want to go a bit further:
-find a cheap A6 block and rebuild it to OE specs (steel main caps, more dome on the pistons to raise compression, and SUPER CHEAP)

However, by the time you are done(assuming you are not doing the work yourself), you may as well have bought a JDM B20B(low manifold, not the giraffe style) and found yourself an LS trans.

RotaryPower

Haha, if I didn't have a mortage and bills up the rear end, I'd be able to afford a k-series!

Even though the engine alone is nearly twice what I paid for the car:rofl:

crez
02-28-2009, 11:08 AM
K series is for the wealthy. Tonnes of money for excellent uncomparable daily driven raw power and great trannys. But that much money into a B would kill it all over the place.

kolumbo69
02-28-2009, 11:23 AM
Even a fairly aggressive b-Series would get tore up by a k-series with gains of over 15WHP with I/H/E and able to make 225 WHP with just minor bolt ons thats getting into the upper limit of what a B Series can handle for N/A.

403civic
02-28-2009, 12:21 PM
I had the same car, it was my first car and I did Intake (cheap ebay) and a magnaflow exhust, it was faster then stock and I could keep up with my friends 05 Civic :D (the one with the big wing)
IMO if your not looking for a fast car, but just a peppy little thing u should get I/H/E and an intake manifold, it would be peppy and nice for daily driving and it would probably cost under $10000

RotaryPower
03-07-2009, 07:12 PM
well my LCA's FINALLY came in, I had just lost all hope that they would ever arrive.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/-Alexx/Civic/DSC_0593.jpg

I also picked up some OEM style fogs, and ordered a type-r style lip from speedtech, that should be here in a couple weeks.

As far as the engine goes, for now I am thinking that I'll just do a mini-me swap and see where it goes from there.

RotaryPower
03-25-2009, 10:39 PM
A little update, car is in getting the mini-me done
and progressively more and more parts are building up in my living room.
need the car back so I can start installing some of it..
in the pile I've got my wheels... love em or hate em. they're different :poosie: (Thanks bob),
Type-r style lip, ctr replica lights and grille, ghetto style intake with K&N filter (MAD HP GAINZ!)
and that pretty much it so far..
Oh and I got the s2 short shift in a few weeks ago,
looking for a type r shift knob or similar if anyone know where to find one. OEM is massive:guns:

i have the same one from speedtech.. and it didn't come with any instructions on install.. just a few washers and screws lol
did you just drill holes into the bumper and screw the lip on? or did you use 3M double sided tape as well?

Mr_ET
04-25-2009, 08:06 AM
look at the underside of your bumper, there are 2 notches that are usually used with the bracket and bolts to hold it on there and usually you have 2 little self tapping screws on each side of the bumper on the ends of the lip to hold it on there.

btw OP very nice work man!

RotaryPower

It would probably be a good idea to use D/S Tape on the top edge that touches the bumper, it'll keep it from moving around too much and stressing the screws..

Tint is personal so its solely up to you, i like the looks of cars with no tint but i like having it at the same time.

Nice looking ek by the way definately needs some slammin, shitty about the coils my buddy has the same thing happening on his. I would suggest maybe compressing the spring and seeing if taking the pressure off helps at all.

looks SICK!
Take the mudflaps off and remove the tint and the ride is money.

the type ones aren't too bad being as low as they are.
mudflaps are basically gone now anyways thanks to a trip down to lethbridge yesterday, and I removed the tint last weekend :nut:

Siiigh.
Hit a massive pothole yesterday.
broke 3 of 4 studs on left front, and wrecked my wheel.
not sure if anything else got bent or not.

upgrading to blox extended studs, hopefully able to buy a single wheel, and need some new j's lugs.

I havent been able to check the cv boot/axle, tie rod or balljoints yet, but I'm hoping that they're okay. I don't have much spare cash, so this was not fun for me :(
