You are indeed mistaken.. :) They routinely take people up in the choppers, they just don't put as much fuel in so they can compensate for the extra weight. Believe it or not those helicopters will only burn about $100 worth of fuel an hour, which is actually really inexpensive when you consider how much it can do and how much coverage it gives the city.

I've gone up with HAWC and I can say that if anyone ever gets the opportunity to do so, take that chance. They are amazing helicopters and we have managed to employ some extremely talented former military pilots who can push the aircraft to the envelope - when they do the rotation patterns literally on its side flying in a circle, managing to keep it dead centered over what they are looking for, or making snap turns to follow a car moving at high speed, you will be amazed.

Back in 2004 I bid on a helicopter ride in HAWCS at a silent auction.. I ended up winning it for around $850 if I remember right..

It was worth the money.. funnest time I have had in a while! they make you watch 1/2 hour worth of early 1990's safety films beforehand. They let me control the spotlight wherever I wanted.. I ended up lighting up my gf's house at 11pm... she had mentioned to me that from the inside she thought it was daylight out.

Then they proceeded to fly over the co-pilots ex gf's house to check on her (very slow day)..

Was alot of fun! but it's cold up in there and it smells intensely like gasoline.

I do this in a civilian role right now....sit left seat and aim various cameras and lasers looking down on the ground (from airplanes and helicopters) looking to one day to join the CPS and perhaps the air division.

Is it typically a position (as an operator) that only gets rewarded to senior members of the force or can anyone apply given enough regular duty service?

You can apply after 4 years of service - but there is a multitude of courses they would prefer you have before applying which usually eliminate fairly new officers, such as surveillance and things of that nature (for obvious reasons) and generally they want people to have good police experience under their belt as HAWC flight officers have to be keenly aware of policy, legislation, and police duties regarding the multitude of things that they help out with.
