I'm going to buy a used car. It's a 2006 BMW 325XI.

I checked car report. It has an accident record.

Accident Estimate Data
Report Date Activity Type Point of Impact Estimate Amount Date of Incident Location Odometer Reading
5/25/2006 Estimate Right Door 2289.00 2006-05-05 N/A N/A
11/30/2006 Estimate Right Door 2414.00 2006-05-05 N/A N/A

The dealer says it was just a scratch.

Is it safe to buy this car? or is there anything I need to check?

lol not a scratch hmmm , maybe get someone to check it out.. If its just a banged up door and its been replaced , then go for it, if its a good deal.

Do I need to get another dealer to check it?

How can I check if it has been replaced?

thanks

It doesn't take much damage to make a $2,400 insurance claim on a BMW..
I wouldn't be concerned.. Personal opinion though..

^ LOL

Dude, sounds fishy. Who would claim insurance on "just a scratch"

You can go to a shop and most scratches can be delt with.

A 5k scratch? More like a 5k destroyed door

Its not a big deal, its called blending the paint so it matches with the rest of the car. I'd be worried if it costed $500.00 bucks to fix this scratch as opposed to $3000.00.

I agree with Baker, $2400 on a door is nothing.

Probably as small as a someone opening a door onto yours. I paid $1100 for a dent from a rock $2400 is very possible.

There is no way somebody else smacking it with their door would result in a $2400 insurance claim, more likely it was rubbed in a parking lot or took a minor side impact.

$2400 sounds about right to repair a door and blend to the rest of the car. The real question is why were the 2 estimates 6 months apart. Why was it left in that condition for 6 months (at least) before being repaired? Likely it was a minor accident and they were arguing about which insurance company would be footing the bill, but being left unrepaired for 6 months could be an issue depending on how severe the damage was. Personally unless you were getting a great deal on it I would walk away and find a different one.

I've never heard of car report, would that be info from a carfax or a carproof? If it is the first, run a carproof as well, you may get some more information.

The two quotes are 6 MONTHS apart.

I took it as a total bill of 5k or two separate incidents.

Likely it was a crash where there was a dispute about liability. Right away the guy went to get a quote on it, the quote was entered, then the war over liability started and it took 6 months to sort out, then he went to a different shop for either a second opinion or the actual repair.

The other possibility is that it was repaired once, done wrong, then had to be re-done, hence the same "incident date"...

Either way, I would be really cautious of that. If the guy didn't get it fixed right away I wonder what else wasn't taken care of right away.

As long as the last owner had collision/ comprehensive, his own ins. company would have fixed it right away... THEN fought someone else over liability to reimburse what they paid to have it fixed. Two qoutes 6 mths apart seems strange to me. I'd keep shopping for a clean title... Whoever you sell this car to later is gonna be asking you the same questons.

Just my experience here...

I bought a car once that had been hit in the drivers side door. I knew it had been hit, but thought it was no big deal. Worst mistake I have ever made buying a used car.

Cars are a dime a dozen, buy another one. Don't buy a car that has been hit. It's your money.

Don't take it to heart now newb.

Who said that you're right? There is no evidence that you're correct, whatsoever, just differing opions.

i work in a bodyshop and 2400$ for a scratch is rediculious. even if it had to be painted and the adjascent panels blended 2400$ is to much. I would start tapping the door to find the filler. listen for a solid thunk sound over a hollow thud. a bad explaination i know but it's all i can offer. My opinion.. if you really want the car, buy it. if you can wait and find something else do it.
