I moved into my condo a couple months ago and its a new building, only being 3 years old. There was renters in it before I bought it and they left the place in shambles, dog piss on the carpets, the linen closet smelled like a litter box, walls were destroyed, oven was disgusting and had NEVER been removed to be cleaned and as you can tell, these weren't the cleanest people.

I've managed to clean everything else up except for one thing. Both of the toilets have those rings around and I can't seem to get rid of it. I've tried bleach, comet, elbow grease, Vim bathroom cleaner, pretty much every off the shelf product out there and they are still fairly visible. Anyone have any tips for getting rid of that? I've tried letting all the chemicals sit (never at the same time of course lol) overnight but still no success.

Have you tried CLR?

I googled it and found these links. Lots of different solutions recommended by people so try them out :)

Looks like some people used something called "The Works" and it cleans everything right up.

Personally I'd try bleach or CLR for a couple nights in a row.

So how much have you spent on cleaners total? $50? $100?...

If all that stuff doesnt work, a new toilet is $80.

What colour is the ring ?

Shit like Draino is heavily caustic or acidic, and if left eats the enamel.. then you get mould growing inside the ceramic itself. Its shows up grey/black.

That ZEP stuff works really well. Just make sure to wear gloves, it is pretty nasty stuff.

A shit pos toilet, mind you.

A good, low flush, which saves not only the environment but your wallet, will cost A LOT more. 300 +

More like $140 after the City of Calgary rebate. for a 6l/4l dual flush low flor.

It all depends on what you care about really. I just put a brick in my tank, and its instantly low flow. (Not dual flush tho)

A 6l flush is $50

Lysol wont touch the calcium.

I used that zep stuff on a rental property once. They had let the batthtub faucet get all covered in scale.

I took the faucet right off and let it soak for 30 minutes in a 50/50 mix.

Ended up buying a new faucet, not only was the scale gone after half an hour but all the chrome was too.

Something my mom likes to do is place a few layers of toilet paper around the ring marks (ie. just along the water line around the bowl), then uses any chemical her heart desires as the cleaning agent. The toilet paper keeps the cleaner concentrated at the water rings and keeps the cleaner from getting diluted in the water. It works for her everytime!

Dump in a bottle of coca-cola before you hit the sack. Should be able to scrub off in the morning.

I used CLR on a basement toilet that had a ring around the inside and had not been flushed in over a year. Poured some in, closed the lid and let it sit for 3-4 hours, then went over it with a toilet brush and everything came off. Good as new!

Sorry to hijiack this thread, but where exactly is this from? I'm developing my basement so I could use one of these for the bathroom.

It's from the 'Home Improvement Warehouse', located on Centre Ave NE just east of Barlow Trail...

Great place to pick up inexpensive materials for renovations, I go there all of the time.

Shut of water, flush toilet and use the edge of a small sharp knife to scrape away the build up. Be careful not to damage the porcelain. Once the tough stuff is gone a Mr. clean Magic eraser will take care of the rest.

+1 on Lysol toilet bowl cleaner, stuff kicks ass, except I got the black bottle. I think it is the "Extreme" version, for really shitty toilets.

It's called "toilet ring remover" from any hardware store. It comes in a white bottle with blue or black writing and works great.

Try Tilex (i use the tilex daily shower cleaner on anything, not just in the shower). spray and leave on for a couple of minutes then use a magic eraser
