I'm starting to notice that more and more message boards are using the same "software/application/code" (???). Is it free for download?

No, it's vbulletin, and it costs $200cdn if I remember right.

you could try phpBBS .. they are free.

phpBB supports MSSQL as well, so it's pretty awesome. The UI is a bit different than vbulletin though, and vb seems to be the most popular out there.

I have a vbulletin license that I'm not using, it expires next April or something?
