I have a dlink wireless router that is dual range. In the options I can pick 2.4 ghz or 5ghz. What is the difference? And I thought it would run both at the same time. Are there any draw backs depending on which one I choose.

Thanks

There's a lot less interference on the 5ghz channel, but it won't be backwards compatible with b/g devices, only a devices.

The 2.4ghz channel has lots of things that can interfere with it's performance, but it's backwards compatible with b/g devices.

If all your devices can do 5ghz, then definately switch to it.

I bought a dual band high-end router, and a dual band - same brand USB antenna.

The 5ghz signal travelled only about 50% as far as 2.4ghz.

Higher frequency means that it doesn't penetrate walls and such as good as a smaller frequency band. Dir-825 can do both at the same time. I use 5GHz for my xbox video streaming and 2.4 for my laptops. Keeps the two networks independent and doesn't slow down either one when one is heavely used
