Hey, I am buying a 1996 eclipse from a guy I know, but the problem is that it doesnt have an engine.. He is a mechanic and can put it in for me, but the problem is finding the motor... it is a mopar 2.0, and nobody seems to have one... one guy i called even called it crap.. is it really that bad?

Isn't it just a neon engine?

yeap, the non-turbo Eclipse motor shares the same motor as the Neon.

what model eclipse?
GSX has the turbo engine no?...4G63
i heard that although the 4G63 has potential, it is unreliable.

oh okay i reread the post....why not get a 4G63 instead of the neon engine?

you see, the problem is... i know nothing about cars :dunno: i was told that it was a chrysler motor. the guy im buying the car from also said that i could get a gs-t, but that it probably wouldnt "book the tranny"... ya... :dunno: :dunno:
Also, i just called this place and they said they wanted $2700 for the mopar 2.0 ! ah!

You can't get the GSX motor if your car started out as a GS because the GSX is AWD, and GS is FWD so they're not interchangable because of their transmissions.

The neon engine(D4RE, S4RE) is almost the same as eclipse 2.0 (420A)

The block, cams, crank, pistons, rods are all the same.
The ECU, intake and exhaust are all different.
The heads are similar, but are a different casting due to the exhaust coming off of the front.

Hope that helps you'd better find a mitsu engine or at least a mitsu head the block won't matter much.

i see. but wasnt there an eclipse that was turbo and front wheel drive?

i guess even if there is one, it would be hard to find the engine and tranny setup...

There was not a FWD turbo version of the DSM's

Aftermarket kits a widely available however

Yes there were. Gojeero check out www.dsmtalk.com they will have the answers you need on swapping motors. General rule is that if you had a non turbo car you can get a turbo FWD motor in but not an AWD motor. Also if you need a motor try getting one from japan, www.streetimports.com deals with the 4g63 motor and you might be able to get a fwd version from them.

Did somebody call? LOL....

Now, gojeero if I was you ...

... then I wouldn't buy this "car". If you don't know much about this car (or others) then you're probably going to get taken to the cleaners. :dunno: I'd keep looking for one that works out of the box. ;)

I agree with DSM Power, if you don't really know much about cars you will probably end up paying way too much to change from a Eclipse RS or GS to a GS-T (FWD Turbo). You will also find this route to be more costly then buying a GS-T or GSX right from the beginning...and will also be more reliable. As for the price quoted for the Mopar 2.0 which I am assuming to be the neon engine... it's seems way to high!
