So here is the question.

If I buy this http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/PID-MX1979(ME).aspx

Do I need a gigabit router as well?

This is what I envision:

Shaw -> WRT160N -> 8 port gigabit switch -> all PCs and periferals.

The WRT160N would be the DHCP server.

Is the switch smart enough to send data from a PC to another PC and not have to go back to the gateway (which in this case is the wrt160N)? Will the switch drive the traffic between my Home server and my PC at gigabit speeds?

not 100% sure anymore but IIRC no, you won't need a gigabit router because your devices plugged in the switch are on the same subnet (ip range) so they will be communicating using Layer 2 MAC address.

the WRT160N is a wireless router correct?

Yes, switch makes a direct connection between both 1Gbps devices.

Holy fawk!

moving 1 GB files from my server to my desktop just got so much more satisfying... should have bought this switch ages ago!

haha congrats, you got me intrigued to get a gigabit switch now

They're so cheap now, good investment if your machines have GigE adapters and you move stuff internally... a five port is probably plenty, less demanding and wireless devices can just hang off the router.

I wanted the 8 ports because I have a few hardwired peripherals.

1. WHS (server)
2. Desktop
3. PS3 (which apparently has a gb adaptor)
4. Denon 3808CI
5. Wii
6. Tivo
7. Xbox360
8. Network printer 1
9. Network printer 2

I am sure that as more things become wired, I will need more capacity. Right now, I am only running the first 4 on the gb router and that takes up 5 ports.

Been using gigabit for a while, pretty fast stuff at home. At work we are just getting some 10gigabit stuff, this stuff is insane fast
