What do the letters mean (if they mean anything at all)? I usually see the D on dealer plates, but occassionally I'll see M and V plates on random cars. Always wondered what it was about.

^ is right.

The ran out of 'D' plates and started using 'M' plates. Dealers still refer to them all as 'D' plates. They both require the same insurance.

The posters above me are all correct. They are plates that clients have accreditation for.

^ The type of plate that starts with one digit, followed by a dash and more digits are considered public services plates. So if you have one of them, it is either so you can haul someone elses goods province wide, or rental can also be considered public service.

***edited for my crappy spelling
