^ I think this is besides the point. Sad to see a company of that size cut jobs.

Not sure how many people ConocoPhillips employs in calgary, but as a percentage, 150 people is small beans.
One of my buddies works for a smaller engineering firm, and his company laid off a third of it's staff.

Apparently the news crew was on site. Sounds like someone tipped them off. Disgruntled employee or planned? I know they said they were cutting back, but how would the news crew know when to show-up?
I head 120 today.

They laid of 115 people in Calgary today. It was announced a while back that they were cutting their workforce globally by 10%

Actually its almsot 10% of the Conoco work force in Canada, I wouldn't consider that small beans when the rest of the staff being cut from Conoco globally is 4%.

Is that number full time staff or a combination of staff and contractors? It would be interesting to know which areas they are reducing i.e. juniors, middle management, etc.

I was talking to a guy over there yesterday, he gave me his card and joked that he may as well hand them out while he can. I think he was safe, but if those are the jokes running around the offices...eek.
They are honoring their commitments(i.e people that they gave employment offers) to the summer students this year, thats all I know.

I think co-ops are fine at least for the upcoming term. They are relatively cheap anyways.
I'd assume most companies would keep your co-op and internship commitments. Cheap and might provide a labor source for them a year or 2 later if the economy is back on its feet.

You sound like you're in the same office as me lol.
anyhoo, I guess media doesn't tell you much cuz 100 people is nothing. The Bantrel office close by went from 2000 to 60 apparently. And that's in a newly built office complex too....
