When Nissan brought the Z Car to the North American market, the Fairlady name, which is a acceptable for a car in Japan, wasn't considered suitable in the North American market for a sports car (really, any car for that matter).

The number designation sticks with the car. for the Z32 (and Z31), the 300 represents engine displacement (3 litre) the Z for Z Car (obviously) and the X was meant to stand for "Luxury", reflecting how the cars became well equipped touring cars from the bare bones sports cars they began as.
