New to the game

Well i finally cracked yesterday and bought a dslr, the D40 to be exact.
For quite some time now i have been interested in photography and saved up for this camera. So far i just have the 18-55mm lens but im going to buy a 50mm lens and flash next.

Any tips would be nice now. should i buy a program like photoshop elements right away? what other lens would be nice for a beginner?
