ok, so i cancelled my bit torrent download of a movie file a while back. i can't seem to delete the file now. every time i try it says that a program is using the file so it can't be deleted. i have all my programs closed and it still says this. how do i go about deleting it?? it's taking up 700 megs of space that i could really use. it's a normal .avi file or .mpeg can't remember. any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks.

Either try one of 2 things.

Make a startup floppy disk that just loads basic dos. That's it. Windows supplies one usually, or just make one by formating a floppy and click the "Transfer system files". Boot up with just the floppy. Find the file and then delete it through DOS.

Or you can try to load windows in safe mode and then try to delete it.

Good luck.

easy way... empty the folder its in except the bad file, then delete that folder... than recreate the folder and fill it with all the files you removed before you deleted it. Ive had this problem with lonnnnng filenames that windows doesnt recognize

try the simplest thing first.....rename it then delete it.

What OS is this? if it's 2000 or XP you can right click "my Computer", choose manage. Then expand the "Shared Folders" and click on "Open Files". You should see the file in there. Right click it and there should be an option in there to fix it (cant remember exactly what the option is)

Is it an AVI file? Try getting rid of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489- 5FE6850DC73E}\InProcServer32 from the registry.

if you dont know what the registry is you should not be deleting branches
