Man, its crazy how a car depreciates $80K in a matter of 7 years. I think that's freaking insane!!!!

As far as I know, pay GST and duties whatever it maybe!

yo jordan, here's all the shit you'll pay when importing a german car into canada:

RIV fee = $182.00 CND
A/C tax = $100.00 CND
7% GST
6.1% DUTIES on german made car
You'll prob pay $1200-$1600 CND in shipping

i beleive the only thing you have to change before they register the car in canada is add a french sticker on the back of each aigbag.

here's more info:

http://www.ccra-adrc.gc.ca/E/pub/cp/rc4140/README.html

www.riv.ca

the 740i is awsome man and seeing as how are dollar is up there right now it's all so cheap, i'm i the middle of importing something right now too so i'll let you know how it all goes.

smaert move bu6yin from states, cars usually cheaper, and cali cars are sometimes better condition too since they dont see winters
Oasis did a bang up job of explainging shipping and registrationm to
so all the advice i can giv is, for shipping check out Searial, ive had a couple cars shipped through them and theyre good guys, cheaper than mos ttoo, and good to deal with, ask for Darryl Schroder, hes the guy i dealt with each time, from cali it'd b about 1300 for shipping, once u ship it it'll go to the suffreance warehouse in the SE by blackfoot, u pay them 40 bux, after u take some forms from them, go to NE Customs by impressions, sing a buncha forms, and pay ur GST, duties, RIV, A/C tax, then take the car from the waresoue, then get insurance, then outta province safety inspection which can b done anywhere, then u can get registration and ur free to drive, and ull need a Federal inspection, which only cdn tire, stampede lues and ranch;amds ford can do, and u need to do it whitn 55 days or they fine 107 for each month ur larte with it and send some nasty letters about ur car being illegal
hope that helps and good luck with the buy!

First, and most important, you have to make sure that the car is eligible for import.

Aside from that, you pay a flat fee of $182 + 7% GST on the purchase price, plus whatever it costs you to get it to Canadian spec (looks like nothing on the 7 series except for possible the dash) + an out of province inspection. You do not pay additional duty because it is a german car due to the free trade agreement between Canada and the U.S.

I sold my M3 to my friend in Calgary, and it was a relatively painless process, but you have to make sure that it is eligible.

Transport Canada makes the info relatively easy to find:

http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/importusa/impusae.htm

Looks like any BMW from 1987-2003 with the exception of the 850CSi and 1995 M3 are easy.

This link will also be useful:

http://www.riv.ca/english/html/how_to_import.html

Make sure you have title to the vehicle and that you've done a CarFax on it. You don't want to get scammed.

e36m3, i talked to canada customs, i have the paper work on it and it say's that there is a 6.1% dutie on any car not made in north america. Free trade is on products made in canada, usa, and mexico.

We imported the BMW with no problems, and it was made in Germany. The only tax was the 7% GST. I did read that they may assess duty on vehicles not manufactured in Canada or the U.S., but I have never seen how exactly it is calculated, and wether or not it is a flat rate. In any case, they either assessed it at $0, forgot about it, or it wasn't applicable.

Couple interesting things I read.. if the selling price is considered too low by the customs officer at the border, they can choose to charge GST + Duty on the low red book (?) value of the car.. food for thought if you get a great deal.

Also, I forgot to mention that you will definitely need to get daytime running lights working to pass the inspection, but that is a very minor modification, and should be possible with a relay for the 740i or possibly a dealer issued software modification.

i thnk it is a flat rate man
6.1% on all outta continent produced vehicles

so far all the cars ive imported have been japanese, but still, im guessing unless u can prove to them that ur car was made here maybe?
anytime we wanna save cash on duty on somehitng like a bodykit we jus say yea its from north america, the company is american and theyre made right here, not sure how well itll fly with a car tho?
still good luck on watever u decide to import if u do

what bout an E39? those are nice IMO?
not sure if u can get one for about 20 cdn tho nevere really looked em up...

I wouldnt get any bmw older than 97 . A bmw is good with warrenty i think for the fact of expensive parts. This just coming from someone whose family has always owned a bmw.
