In my first year, it was fine. Last year and the first half of this year it was very spotty on my PC's (I had two in this period, and they both had problems). I just bring my iPod Touch now and it is spotty too.

In a different thread others were having problems as well.

I should add, it's only been like this for me yesterday and today. Friends with Macs are having similar issues but when I sit in class, everyone with a PC seem to have no problems surfing the internet. I can't even connect.

I have an HP and it wouldnt connect in machall very well or in ST took 30 minutes for it to finally connect in my class...but in MFH I had no problems today (first time ever very weird)...

But I cant get webmail or my.ucalgary.ca or even www.ucalgary.ca to load at home...

Maybe server issues who knows....but I do wish some of our tuition money would go into getting better wireless on campus its shit most of the places lately...

Air UC and especially RezNet right now, is on the shits.

People are working on it as we speak and right now, I'm talking to one of them and we are trying to solve the issue.

It's funny how reliant it seems we've all become on having campus wireless and internet services...

It is affecting both Mac's and PC's for sure and right now, we're trying to pinpoint the problem.

Very inconvenient for everyone I know, but I'm staying overnight to solve this stupid-ass problem.

Okay, AirUC SHOULDN'T be having a problem right now but RezNet is almost being resolved.

If you are having issues or a colleague is having an issue, please post your IP address, DHCP, and MAC address in that order please and we'll check what the issue may be.

Any help will be quite useful and would help us solve the issue. Thanks and do apologize for the inconvenience caused by the internetz! :D

Pretty sure people on Shaw Internet can't access ucalgary.ca but people on Telus Internet can.

flipstah
03-24-2009, 08:52 PM
OKAY.

- RezNet is fixed for ~half of the people affected and basically a disable/re-enable of your Wifi card should do the trick. If not, please let RezNet know and we will investigate the matter ASAP.

- As for AirUC, we had some issues in the morning and it was resolved this afternoon.... :dunno:

- As for accessing "ucalgary.ca," it's working right now and I'm on my BB accessing my GOPH 375. :dunno:

Take away funding for SU and put it towards internet efficiency. It's way more useful than they are.

More or less. There's been a nasty trojan floating around (Reznet especially) that's been fucking with the whole system, we've been blacklisting MAC's left and right. The Ucalgary.ca being inaccessible was an issue with the direct link between Shaw and the University, I never did hear which end the problem was on.

now u guys know what it feels like to be a SAIT student haha

toastgremlin
03-28-2009, 12:29 AM
Is it Conficker or something? That thing's been knocking out networks at SAIT, too, from what I hear. Nasty stuff.

The upside of all this is that I get to see a handful of morons starting their own "airuc" ad-hoc networks whenever the infrastructure signal goes down.

A few years ago on campus, I'd have thought it was someone malicious running a packet sniffer, but now I just think it's people who don't understand how to work their computers. I wonder if anyone's sharing anything interesting?

I get this all the time, especially in Engg. Anyone know if it's a hardware or software related (ie. does the problem go away if you load up xp and try to load the internet)?

Wireless comes and goes for Windows and Linux machines too -- it just seems that a lot of Windows wifi tools don't alert you to it right away, but the Mac will pitch a fit and drop the interface as soon as it misses a couple of beacons.

I remember about 3-4 years ago, when wifi was first getting rolled out, that my 12" Powerbook would have constant issues trying to maintain a wireless connection in the education building (and once established, issues trying to get DHCP). My Eee running Ubuntu drops several times per lecture in MFH and even more in ST (and usually can't associate with the network and reports near-zero signal from it for awhile afterward).

I'd be interested in seeing if certain kinds of machines are causing more DHCP/wifi traffic than others - maybe some network card drivers are really "noisy" and making life worse for others.

That, and the number of guys I see using BitTorrent in lectures...
