View Full Version : That's it. I've had it with car acronyms.

OK, what is it with car acronyms? Does anyone know what they stand for?

Hyundai - GLS/GS
Chrysler - ES/LXi

just the trim level, usually one will have more options

like Honda for example.

LX - base model
EX - middle with options
Exr - fully loaded top of the line

Wow, patrick...I am sad to hear you get so excited over acronyms with no meaning...

Lol you think those are bad, have a look at BMW & Mercedes. I like them personally, less confusion when shopping.

Close.

Honda usually has:

DX - "deluxe"?
LX - "luxury"?
EX - "extra luxury"? :dunno:
EX-L - ex with leather
SI - "sport injection"

The R's are rarer like the Accord EX-r usually it means "race".

In recent years, the R is usally a dealer installed packed with rims and spoilers. Like the civic DX-R and LX-R. Where the "R" is not the official Honda trim.

I was talking about the older ones..mostly accords..DX is the US version of our LX, their LX is our EX and so on, exr is ex with sunroof and lips pretty much and a VTEC engine

How are they confusing??

BMW....first number is the series/model second two are the engine displacement

MB Letter is the model, first two numbers are the displacement....3rd number is for fun....

I said I didn't find them confusing, and liked them. As you say with BMW, you know exactly what you are getting by the model name other than some options.

If he doesn't like 3 letter words and the like, I was suggesting he may not like those naming schemes, like the mercedes naming scheme: GLK, GL, SL, SLK, CL, CLK, SL, C, S, B, G, E.

Anyways, its not important lol.

IMO BMW has a great naming system.

The car sizes fit with the numbers too.

The most confusing to me is GM with the same vehicle with 5 different names.

Sort of - but not really anymore these days. Look at the 323, what size is the engine (2.5 not 2.3). What about the 325 (3.0L), and the 335 (3.0L again). It does correlate somewhat to performance/size as the bigger the number, the more powerful the engine, but they no longer match up.

IIRC, the original numbers were named after the engine displacement but since the displacement has gone up, to keep continuity, BMW just started naming them after those same models. If that makes any sense whatsoever haha.

should be like 1, 2, 3, 4 the higher you go the more shit you get. It could be some universal trim level system that can be adopted by all manufacturers.

LOL just cause BMW can't follow the number system or is too lazy to offer new badging every time the displacement changes, doesn't mean the system is wrong...

The C63 is also a marketing thing...

6.2L booooo The engine actually displaces 6.208 liters. However, German automobile tax laws (regarding engine displacement) require the displacement to be rounded up to the next 100cc. Hence, the engine is marketed as a 6.3L.

Well, that would explain the reliability issues if they never made it out of the experimental stage... ;)

right...
because

C600 has a 5.5L V12
SL600 has a 5.5L V12
ML320 is a 3.0L diesel
SL65 is a 6.0L

and as mentioned, all the 63s are actually 6.2Ls
