Sigh... fucking brutal.

Get rid of Piquet and Buemi, flip the results upside down, and it looks believable for last year. Crazy how everything is upside down.

Yikes McLaren & Ferrari in the second half of the pack & Webber in 4th? Other than Webber, all the other top seven times were run with the diffuser, haha.

You guys are nuts for staying up to watch practice

11 o'clock isn't that crazy :poosie:
First F1 action of the year combined with the decent start time and I'm definitely watching it with live timing instead of on PVR today.

Looking back I guess it was just 1am, I saw Bart's post at 2:38 and thought they were all that late, haha.

I'll content myself with watching the repeat tomorrow at 11 :D

I bet Honda is watching this and kicking themselves for not staying in F1 for another year.

Honda would've still sucked if they stayed in. Their motor was down 80hp compared to the others.

Actually, they would've still sucked, but sucked a little less than McLaren .

buh_buh
03-27-2009, 09:24 AM
even so, the Brawn chassis was designed around the Honda engine, and Honda had been working on their KERS for a pretty long time, and was thought to be the most advanced of all the teams before they scrapped the team. And I suspect if Renault was allowed to improve their engine to catch up, so would Honda, although Renault is still slow, but because of the engine or chassis or both remains to be seen.

Massa's "tank slapper" was pretty cool, surprised he didn't lose it based on how everyone else was losing control of their cars.

On a side note, I always thought tank slapper was a term used for bikes, and not cars.

I LOLed at the top 8 including all the diffuser cars and their loudest opponents.

Vettel hit the grass there two or three times and looked surprised when it happened. I'd imagine the lighting has something to do with it.

This race is going to be garbage for the pool. Low downforce, wide front wings, bumpy turn 1 and shitty lighting is going to make for an absolute clusterfuck in turn 1. I think I'm going to adjust my picks assuming that it's going to be a disaster.

I didn't think I heard a difference in the engines either but after pulling up some videos and comparing the two, it's pretty noticeable.

McLaren PR:

2009 AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX – FREE PRACTICE ANALYSIS

Today’s run programme targeted the following objectives: aero and mechanical set-up work, prime and option tyre evaluation, tyre degradation analysis over a long stint.

HEIKKI KOVALAINEN

P1 programme

“Although the track was very green and slippery, the car felt good from the start of the session,” said Heikki. “Our balance was good, particularly in the high-speed corners, and KERS deployed well, working smoothly throughout both sessions.”

Heikki quickly felt comfortable with the car and the operating window of the tyres, setting a 1m27.982s best – which placed him near the top of the P1 timesheets. He followed it up with a six-lap run (1m27.495s) as the track continued to evolve.

P2 programme

Focus shifted from set-up work to tyre evaluation over longer runs. Heikki completed four runs (four laps/1m28.148s; three laps/1m28.757s (cut short by flat-spotting a tyre at Turn Two); 11 laps/1m28.064s (the first on options); nine laps/1m27.802s).

The time differential between the two compounds didn’t appear to be too marked – and both held up well over the course of a stint.

“A reasonable first day – even if the times don’t properly reflect that,” Heikki said, after finishing 17th on a 1m27.802s. “We saw some decent pace and made some progress which was pleasing for the new guys on my car this year.”

LEWIS HAMILTON

P1 programme

Lewis started with a five-lap run (best time 1m30.105s) to form a baseline for the day’s programme. A later four-lap run saw Lewis visibly working his tyres on his first flying lap, yielded a 1m29.042s. A two-lap, final run of the session produced a best of 1m31.747s.

“The first session didn’t prove too productive for us,” said Lewis. “We worked hard to get the prime tyres to operate effectively, but the track conditions and our set-up made it difficult to get them to work, and it didn’t give me the confidence to push hard.”

P2 programme

Some set-up work between the sessions made Lewis more comfortable. He completed runs of six laps (1m27.958s best), seven laps (1m28.431s), seven laps (1m27.813s) and a shorter, three-lap stint (1m29.438s) to evaluate set-up changes.

“The changes we made after P1 made the car feel much better,” said Lewis. “We’re still working to refine the balance – and we have a number of issues still to address – but we are heading in the right direction.”

While the focus of the run programme precluded the setting of low-fuel fast laps, MP4-24’s speed over a long run looks better than testing indicated, although it is too early to accurately predict overall. Lewis finished the day with a 1m27.813s best, 18th fastest.

MARTIN WHITMARSH – team principal, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes

“We arrived in Australia fully aware that we’d be facing a tough start to the season. But we adhered to a disciplined programme today, focusing on tyre durability work, and weren’t swayed by a desire to post flattering times. Equally, we’re now focusing on implementing the performance steps we’ve planned for the next few races. Overall, then, we’ve made good progress recently but are well aware that we’ve still got a lot of work to do.”

NORBERT HAUG – vice-president, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport

“After the winter tests, we knew that we would have a difficult start into the season. While our car has improved since the Barcelona test, we still have a lot of work to do.”
I'm in no mood to pull up the other team's... :(

Massa sucks. Everyone else controlled their slides much better.

Good to see Ferrari struggling a bit tho. I don't feel so left behind haha. Both McL and Ferrari were a mess on the track. No traction!

Absolutely, great to see Honda (OK, brawn GP  ) back in the game.

Kind of reminiscent of the good ol' days.

Race start weights (fuel load) data has been published... and both BrawnGP cars are the 2 heaviest cars in the top 8. They have about 6-8 laps more fuel than anyone else.

So did anyone take that Button bet at 40:1 that I suggested during pre-season testing? :D

A2VR6
03-28-2009, 10:44 AM
Hmm interesting, looks like the Toyotas are starting from the back due to stewards finding their rear wings to be too flexible.

Should be a good one.... btw GO BRAWN!

rage2
03-28-2009, 11:04 AM
So I'm going over all the published weights, with fuel corrected Q3 times the BrawnGP cars look to be about a second a lap faster than the next team. That's pretty dominating performance, reminiscent of McLaren's '88 dominance (well, for tracks similar to Australia... they were 3s a lap faster on other tracks).

Massa was quoted as saying if BrawnGP continues with this pace, they'll wrap up the Championship by June.

go Brawn !!! They scrapped the KERS they'd been developing since May '08, and the car wasn't even designed for the Benz engine to begin with and was just thrown in there after 8 months of designing the car around the Honda engine and ran it for a week. I know both guys have said the Benz engine feels a lot better, but tons of sacrifices were made to shoehorn it into their chassis, so I think at best its a wash. I think they'd be just as quick with the Honda engine (and KERS) in the back. The previous piles they'd been driving lacked mechanical and aerodynamic grip, I don't think their biggest problem was in their engine.

And plus, its the usual Honda suspects, even Fry :thumbsdow

Having a MB engine in the back is a little annoying though, because now Rage has an excuse to cheer for them when McLaren's "racing" with Force India and Toro Rosso. The only way this would be sweeter is if they were giving laying beatdowns with a Ferrari engine in the back, not that I'm a Ferrari fan at all.

haha not at all. I'm proud of what BrawnGP has done, but as you saw last night after Q2, I pretty much gave up and had to endure you screaming when BrawnGP qualified 1-2. I'm not a bandwagoner.

Ya, when you watch the end of the race, it says unofficial results on the screen. Official results comes out after the stewards speak to everyone they need to, in which case it was after trulli lost his place, and sign off on the amended results.

Which is probably why the pool didn't update until later, when the official times were posted. Okay, that makes sense.

Except....

Trulli spins, Hamilton passes. Hamilton's team tells Hamilton to slow down and let Trulli get the position back. Trulli gets penalized for doing so. You see where I'm going with this?

Really Hamilton had no choice but to pass Trulli if Trulli spun off the track... I don't see how it should be legal for you to reclaim a spot during a safety car if you run off the road. Trulli made a mistake a it cost him under the new rules.

Trulli ran off road near the end of the race, thus losing a place to McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, but then repassed the world champion once he had rejoined the circuit.

Hamilton really had no choice but to pass, he can't stop and wait for Trulli to get back in line. :dunno: Stewards obviously saw it as Trulli making a mistake going off, and then passing later under the safety car. That's kinda how I understand it anyways.. :D

Mibz
03-29-2009, 02:45 PM
Well yeah, I don't blame Hamilton for passing him. I'm just saying that he shouldn't have been penalized for Hamilton letting him get past. I bet both McLaren and Toyota thought that they were doing the right thing by having Trulli get his position back. I bet McLaren thought -they'd- get penalized if they didn't let Trulli take 3rd.

I dunno, just seems like a shitty situation for Trulli because I don't think he, nor his team, would have made the pass had they thought it was illegal.

Apparently Toyota's going to appeal that the punishment was too harsh. I agree with them, but we'll see how it goes.

buh_buh
03-29-2009, 03:09 PM
imo I don't think it was too harsh. I do however think Vettel's penalty was too harsh. I think that was a racing incident, and was probably both of their faults. Vettel for not giving way, but also Kubica for not giving Vettel enough room.

If they wouldn't have taken each other out, they would have taken 2nd and 3rd.. which would have kept Barichello farther down the list, so you would have lost some points with choosing Bari to come 2nd.. I think.. :nut: hahah!

Well our sub-league is ranked 22nd... not bad considering the size of it.. :D

Yep, but it makes my Alonso and Glock picks next to spot on, thus lots of points haha.

BTW - Hamilton's officially 3rd now. POS McLaren, last place to podium. In a car that had pace to qualify 15th.

Hopefully that will silence the haters

uhhh I dont like this pool.

usually when a ferrari drops out my heart sinks, but when kimi hit the wall I felt a small relief. this is not good. if truli wouldn't have doped out I would have been tied for third :banghead:

i really like the KERS graphic, hopefully they will show it more often.

cant wait for next week :burnout:

I think Vettel's penalty was shitty. The fact he was racing for 2nd (er... got chopped for 2nd) and didn't get any points was punishment enough. Besides, shit happens and it was as much Kubica's fault because he didn't end up outbraking Vettel by as much as he thought he would.

I agree... Either both should have been penalized, or neither of them at all.

Evidently theres video footage that goes against Trulli's penality. Apparently he went off the track a slight whilst behind the SC and thats when Hamilton passed, he is technically allowed to re-pass if this is the case.

So what exactly happened with Toyota's rear wing penalty? Who pointed out the excessive flexibility in it?

There is no re-pass rule. The rule states that if the car in front has a problem, then you are allowed to pass it during a safety car period.

You'll see from the video that Trulli goes completely off track, and Hamilton makes the pass before he's back on the track, which made it legal. You'll also see Glock go off, and shortly after that, Alonso passes Vettel, who has 3 wheels, who's also deemed to have a problem, thus making the pass legal.

What the problem with Trulli's penalty is that he passed Hamilton because Hamilton slowed down on the track to let him pass. McLaren had NO clue if Hamilton's pass while Trulli was offtrack was legal or not, because FIA is fucking retarded. Hamilton didn't want to risk it and slowed down, so he had a defense if he was to be called up. Trulli made the pass. This is what broke the rules. FIA called them in after the race (there was no McLaren protest apparently, they were more than happy with 4th haha) and handed down the 25s drive thru penalty to Trulli.

As with last year's Hamilton Spa penalty, drive thru penalties are unappealable.

All this could've been avoided if there's some competency with the FIA and race control. Radio up race control, ask them if the Hamilton pass was ok, or if they should let trulli by, or check to see if Trulli should get 3rd back or stay in 4th, and solve it within a few corners. Unfortunately, last year at Spa it's proved that Race Control has no say in any of this (Charlie Whiting said the pass was OK while Hamilton got a penalty), so it's purely a guessing game to see who did it right and who gets slapped with a penalty.

In Champcar races back in the day, you don't even have to radio race control. They'll just tell whomever to give the position back before the green if there was a mistake made in the running order. Simple.

Nobody pointed it out. It failed the FIA scrutineering test.
