Especially if you have diffusers and such....

Those do seem fairly precariously balanced...

I think its an awesome idea. Looks like it bolts to a hitch, so if you're gonna pull a mini trailer, you'd need the hitch anyways. Way lighter and cheaper than a mini trailer.

if it works and its cheap, why the hell not

If he's got a genuinely well-built rig there and they don't move around and it utilizes a hitch mount, I don't see what's wrong with this. I think it's a great way to bring wheels to the track on a budget. Better than filling the rear seat and the trunk with rubber which tends to get on everything. I've had to do it and this mount is a lot less gayer than a dirty ruined interior. Some people are pretty quick to play the old gay card.

It's called a tire tail. Very popular with tracked Miata's and S2000s

It mounts to the hitch, I haven't heard of any failures involving them, but you are putting a significant amount of tongue weight onto the hitch.

More reason to buy lighter wheels.
many of the guys from CSCC have these, others that don't have the trunk space for the rest of the gear have small trailers ( theirs a couple corvettes around the city.)

It is 200lbs of tongue weight.

Why is this gay?

I think it is a great idea and you don't have to worry about a trailer.

It's usually the tires that contribute most of the weight. A few lbs per wheel won't make a big difference.

But that's a great idea. I hate driving with trailers attached.

Because it looks like shit, and unless you're driving a del sol transporting 22 inch rims for who knows what kind of retarded reason, you can fit the tires in the car.

No you can't.

The STi will only fit 1 wheel in the trunk with a jack and you will be lucky to get two wheels in the back seats.

If you don't have a passenger, you can put one on the front seat too, if you don't mind your elbow touching the tire.

I don't think it's gay....just wouldn't work for everyone out there....

I mean like I mentioned above if you have a rear diffuser (non-OEM) or rear lips or something a hitch mount might not work out so well for you...

I can't fit 4 tires in my car either without having to put one in the passenger seat, which isn't exactly ideal.
The people that care about bringing tires to events, probably aren't the same type of people who care if it looks like shit for the 10 minute drive you have to take to transport them to the track.

Function>Form

If you want to argue function over form, a trailer is a far better idea than this. Unless of course you don't like the way a trailer looks...

It also obscures the license plate. Is it legal to have the plate displayed in the back window in Alberta?

I would just rather go with this over a trailer from a pure cost standpoint. I wouldn't really care if it looks good or not. Really, is a trailer going to look that much better than having a that on the back of your car? Neither look good, and one does the same job for cheaper.
I'm a cheapass, so why do something that costs more when something else can do it just as well for the same price?

Yes.

It's an alright idea. Personally, I would have my wife follow me in the panzer-wagen with everything I need.

I think it's pretty cool. But if it's a track car why would you have a hitch?

I mean if there's one oem maybe but I wouldn't go adding one.

I have a hitch on my STI to pull my motorcycle trailer for bike track days. (it's a 3 row bike trailer so no place for car rims on it)

I also take my STI to track days, so this unit makes sense if I ever become baller enough to run a third set of rims for R-comps..

Plus it's got to be easier / smaller to store than a trailer.

There is a pic floating around the intergoogle of a Ferrari (355 I think) with 4 tires sitting on his engine cover. He was stopped at a gas station on his way to (or from) a track day.

Just the grass, and the nice houses, the sun, the warmth, the windows open, the top down on the 911!

FUCK SNOW!

Anyways, the tire idea is great. not stupid at all.

Nice setup with the bikes / sti there dude!

The problem I see is that it isn't a Cayenne Turbo S.

so what do you do when you get to the track though? you have no where to put your tires? of do you race with the street wheels hanging off the back of your car?

you cant just leave your street wheels sitting around while you race with your track wheels.

Why not? Pretty common practice at the track.

If you use your eyeballs, it appears to be the spare for the truck, and 4x track wheels in a mesh configuration for the car.

Seems very practical to me, not everyone has room for a trailer to sit around the house for when it gets used.

Its simple for the people who enjoy taking their cars to the track but not have a track dedicated vehicle.

this makes perfect sense to be honest.

but then again, not like anyone is forcing you guys to buy it:dunno:

I want to meet the guy that does that, except make them at least 40 inch super swampers, taller than the car when they're sitting on the ground.
