I want to start rally racing with a co-worker. I would prefer a rear wheel drive car.

Anyone have any suggestions for around 5K?

None of the above.

Get onto the rally sites and look for a car that is already setup. It will save you lots of money and you will get a much better car for your money.

A good place to start is the rally and market place sections here: http://cscc.speedracer.ca/forums/index.php

a 200sx with a sr20 or ca18 swap
simple, light, and can use most 240 parts suspension wise

Exactly with all the safety equipment required for rally cars you won't be able to build one for that budget

You will require a minimum of $10K to build a car from scratch and get all the required safety equipment.

You will need (not a complete list);

-Roll Cage (~$3000)
-Racing Seats/Belts (~$1500)
-Fire resistant Racing Suit (X2) (~$500 each)
-Snell helmets (X2) (~$400 each)
-Hans devices (X2) (~$1000 each)
-Intercom system (~$250)
-Rally Computer (~$300 used)

That puts you at almost $9K and you haven't even bought the car or touched the mechanicals of the car... rally suspension, gravel/snow tires, underbody protection, etc, etc. You might be able to find some used equipmet to keep the cost down.

I bought my rally car previously built for $4,000, but it was in sad shape. I was into it for over $10K and around 200 hours labour when all was said and done.

Find an existing used rally car, like a VW Golf or a Corolla with a current log book and you might keep it under $10K.

Dave I don't think you've thought this through. Have you even competed in TSD's or RallyX? You'll need one (or two?) of those to get your competition license... Plus be a member of a CARS sanctioned club, plus get your first aid training.

And as stated previously, a RWD platform will not do you well as a novice. A Golf or NX2000 that's got complete (and valid) safety equipment will be your cheapest bet. Plus a trailer, tires for all conditions, travel and competition expenses such as entry fees, plus the time off work, plus recruiting a crew... it's a lot to just dive in head first. Go check your FB.

You don't need a special car to Navi Rally and it is the best way to learn how to read instructions/maps and learn how to do the calculations. It will also help in the driver/co-driver relationship. Nothing like having your co-driver barf all over you and the course notes at two in the morning.

Check out the Calgary Sports Car Club for the next TSD Course.

Try a TSD rally, or a RallyX first, as suggested above, before you make the leap into building a performance rally car.
