As the title says, I need your suggestions for a good car that will be used as a daily driver. The car should be somewhat reliable, easy to maintain and not look like a total grandma/chick car. Preferably a 2 door hatch or coupe and a manual tranny.

I don't want any talk of domestic/import hating or anything like that. I just want your suggestions if you were in the exact same scenario. There is no rush so you could take your time and select a car you would actually want in that price range.

When times were tough for me I bought a $900 Civic hatch and never looked back. Haven't had a problem since I got it. In fact, it's still my winter DD :)

Any Civic DX hatch from 1990-2000 would be my pick. Look for one with lower KMs and well maintained.

Any VWs are super reliable and great on gas...the 93-98 models would definitely be something to consider like a hatchback golf

Yeah I have been looking into civics and golf/jetta type vehicles. I have heard about some quality issues with VW or is that just the newer models? Also, are stock 240sx's with the K engine pretty reliable?

PM EK 2.0. I think he's selling a Civic hatch in your price range.

civic hatch. Parts are cheap (OEM) stuff. super easy to work on. Fairly cheap for insurance. I think EG's are fairly good looking, and dont look to dated.

I have a DC2 up for grabs... uhh ISH?

This guy wants to trade me today. PM me if it interests you.

Otherwise I think DC's are a great balance. Fun, Reliable, and they have more punch than the civic... well I guess that depends on the Civic... lol

But you can find a decent DC2 for about 3500-5000. Just chack Kijiji, there is alwasy a great deal on kijiji

you're a dumbass. GTFO and tint your windshield some more.

To OP: EG Civics, older Prelude's, Acura Legends, even Grand Prix's (like a 97 with the 3.8L) are pretty bulletproof.

Anyways, look into:
- Civics & accords (any year)
- Older VWs (stay away from passat). 93+ VWs were made in Mexico and quality went to shit for the most part.
- KAs have been pretty reliable overall but higher mileage ones are going to have to get the timing chain dealt with, which is labor consuming or very expensive to have someone else fix

Honestly OP, I'd go for a Civic or Accord. This is coming from a guy that isn't even a Honda fan.

1997+ Acura EL premium, they're fully loaded, great gas mileage, very reliable, and not to mention the heated leather seats.

Thanks for all the great responses (except for scat). Sounds like Honda's in general are the favorite here. Too all the people that are offering me actual cars I do appreciate it but I won't be looking till after June. But if they are still for sale then I will definitely look into them. Keep the suggestions comming!

Protege's are also a decent idea.

I have a 1.6l Prot and it gets amazing gas mileage and the only problem it has given me in three years is a bad sway bar endlink and the starter went. It's 9/10 years old too.

funny you mentioned this, also since nissan started being assembled in mexico there started to be a lot of problems (2004 maxima) pretty gay how this will ruin nissan's reputation

Yeah I've heard a lot of crap about maximas lately. My best friend's dad had a 95, I believe, and that thing was bulletproof, we took it everywhere and never had a problem. Apparently he decided to get a newer one and it's been in the garage more times than his old one.

I think that you should be able to pick up around 5
year 2000 cavilers .
for your $5000

Baby the hell out of each one , and you will always make it to work ontime ..

LOL ,
Hey bud , on the hunt for an import ehh . the Yamaha V8 aint cuttin it anymore ?

nahh like the others have said , and you have seen for yourself.

Id look at a 96 and up civic . Easy to maintain . and great on gas .
Keep the mods clean and simple and youll be laughin .

(PS then we should put some nos to your V8 and have some real fun lol)

I got a 1995 maxima myself which I will be putting in the market very soon after I take it for a wash and take some pics today. It is within your price range and comes with 2 sets of tires. PM me if you need any more info or would like to have a test drive.

another car to look into is a 99+ grand am gt. they are wicked cars. my mom has one with 210000+kms and it is still running fine, havent had any major problems in the last 4 years (since we owned it) they are fairly powerful. i think they are rated at 180HP, but they feel quicker. they also look very nice. if they came with a manual tranny i would def own one. thats the reason i sold mine is cause i was bored of auto.

but it fits all the specs you posted and you can find a dec one for around 5000.
