View Full Version : Would you rock a miata?

So I've currently got a 2000 Audi A6, a 2000 Chrysler Neon (winter driver) and a 2006 Kawasaki ZX6R.

I've been thinking of picking up another toy. Lightweight, RWD and bonus if it's a droptop. I'm leaning towards the miata because I can pick one up for MUCH cheaper than an S2k, and it's really lightweight (2100 lbs, and to put that in perspective a lotus elise is 1900 lbs) compared to something like an E30 cab. I'd probably give up the Neon because I have no need for a 4th vehicle.

I'm a guy, and about 6'4, and I'd have to mod the seat/rails, or perhaps bolt the seat straight to the floor to avoid being a human roll bar.

Anyway, think a miata is too gay?

I'd be spending sub-5k. Something that requires work, or something with a torn to shit interior already. Perhaps someone's old SOLO car that needs to be put back together to be street legal.

EK 2.0 I'm a fatass too, but i've driven one around a SOLO II course quite comfortably, even with stock seats. Granted that car had r-comps, but I was completely blown away at the stock suspension/handling. That 1st gen miata was more fun to drive than anything else I've had the pleasure of driving.

Weapon_R definitely sub-$5k. Hoping to pick up one that needs work, or maybe someone's old SOLO car that needs to be converted back to street legal.

In that case you will not find a better roadster for the price. The haters have never driven one. If you were going to spend around 10k, I'd have said to wait for a deal on an s2k.

^^ Agreed.

I'm not a fan of Miatas. Especially the 1st gen - they totally look like a chickmobile. Still, they were so popular for a reason. They are pretty much bulletproof, have great handling, and of course - are designed from the ground-up to be a roadster.

Souped up, I could see some merit in them though. Get some power under the hood, and you can end up with a great hp/weight ratio. Really gotta do something about the feminine rounded look though. Bodykit maybe?

I voted No, but not because of the fear of being labeled gay. I just think the S2000 is better looking and it's worth paying the extra money for, if I bought a Miata I would always think I should have bought an S2k.

Take a look at the statistics of the Miata and all other cars in its range. Plus look at a few reviews of the entry level roadsters, the Miata always comes out on top. It has the best weight distribution (apparently), handling, cornering, power and whatever else it is they measured them on. It beat the S2000 no problem, I would definitely rock one. Especially the Mazdaspeed, just with a bigger intercooler and turbo.

There is nothing welfare about a tastfully modded 240. s15 240's are equally as sought after as the famed GTR. That's why 240's out sold rx7's in every bracket, and every year. Granted the rx7 was never meant to compete with the 240sx. It was meant to compete with the 300ZX.

There is nothing gay about a 250HP turbo miata. The miata club posts some of the fastest times for race city.

If you have never driven a miata you wouldnt know that it handles better then ANY roadster in its bracket. It is a fight to make it oversteer, and even harded to make it understeer. It is just fatally under powered.

I would buy a miata and throw some money into building a motor. Tranny is strong, or the monster miata (v8 miata) But that tends to fuck the absolutely perfect 50/50 weight balance, and the PERFECT CoG that it has.

I drove my friend's Miata a couple of times. It has coils, and wideass wheels. I enjoyed the drive but goddamn this thing is slow. However, the handling feels like a Go-Kart, and is pretty fun.

http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa118/P90Puma/timmies_shoot_07-27-08034.jpg

He built this for around 10g's including the paint job. All mechanical work, and some body prep was done by him though.

I felt like an idiot driving it. Im 6'1, 195lbs and I just don't think I fit inside.

The only way I would own one is if it had the monster (Mustang V8) swap. The lack of power is very frustrating.

You don't need to build the motor. The factory block will handle over 18psi. Can make well over 300whp with a good turbo kit and tuning. Spend $4000 or less depending on what parts you cheap out on for a turbo kit and $2000 on suspension and your untouchable. Should be good for low 12's easy.

Unfortunately you will still be gay for driving a Miata. Just the name "Miata" slightly bothers me.

IMO ANY small two seater roadster is girly. Miata, Z3, Z4, Solstice, Boxster, SLK, etc. They are all fairly relative in the grand scheme of things. Obviously they differ in many ways from eachother via power, styling, handling etc.

I would definitely rock a Miata if it was a garanteed project car.

If you would like a real world opinion that does not come from a homophobic 15 year old than shoot me a PM. I picked up a 1991 Miata as a fun car last year and ended up liking it so much that there is a fight to determine who drives it each day.

I've never found the power to be much of a problem and I prefer driving the Miata over my WRX. It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

this, or even just turbocharge the stock 1.6 (or the 1.8 w/e), talking about first gens tho, have no clue about later models , i've seen that red turbo 1st gen at solo 2 a while back, wowee! autoX king i tell ya.

seriously turbo charge it, do some footwork mods and its a great car, why not? almost neutral weight distribution and it weighs like 2k lbs, any engine swap (SR, LS1 etc) or whatever forced induction path you choose would already give you a head start.

i've only driven one 1st gen and from what i gathered it was a very predictable suspension setup (oem), the thing would slowly let you know the ass end was giving out, very forgiving for oversteer screw ups too lol

See, the thing about the v8 swap that is silly, is how you shoot the weight distribution to shit. Yes, this would not matter on a drag strip, but if you were trying to build an all around performer, that would SUCK. I guess what it comes down to, as it ALWAYS does, is what you want the car to do. I say sr20det or build and turbo the stock engine, because i myself would want an all around performer, that does decent at everything.

Yeah, I think the V8 swap is like swapping an LS1 into an RX7; it doesn't affect the weight distribution at all.

If you think a turbo SR20 is gonna be lighter than an LS1 or something, you have to be kidding.

Looks like it's divided pretty evenly between the two. I was once told back in the day when I used to solo my rx7 that a miata was a perfect track car. And this was told to me by a guy who was at the solo track with a track only corvette. It's a perfect car for tracking. Light weight, rwd, drop top as well which is nice on a nice hot summer day. With a bit of engine work or a nice swap they are monsters.

theirs a nice little daily driving miata somewhere in the city hiding a 350, the only way to tell it's in there is that the cheap laughable walmart hood scoop, is actually functional.

I'd see him at the blaskin & lane by north hill all the time. he buys 2 tires at a time. but never for the front for some reason.

yah, i just did some research, i cant believe how light an ls1 is. Damn. Plastic manifold bastards, that prolly saved alot of weight. I stand corrected, sr20det actually weigh around 450 lb with transmission, so its only slightly less than the ls1 with a tranny on it as well.

However, anybody who wastes their time with an iron blocked v8 in that car would be silly.

There is absolutely nothing exciting about a stock Miata IMO, they are underpowered with hardly any torque. I also hate the way the look and definitely see it as a "chick" car.

If you were to do significant mods, they become less gay, but I'd take just about anything over a Miata.

Just my $0.02

According to every automotive journalist I have any semblance of faith in, the Miata is an all around winner of a car.

Personally speaking, it's WAY too cutsey for my taste. However, this can easily be rectified with a quick trip to your local rice-shop and picking up a body kit. And there's tons to choose from, my personal fav being either something from Veilside or Wings West...

And if you're into pure performance, you gotta go for the Mazdaspeed.

they actually can be quite good handling cars, but if you're looking for under 5k, I don't think its worth it. I'd rather spend $10k and get an S2K. That car is that much better IMO, although a Miata with the right suspension mods is a real winner

^^^

Does anybody want to show me where they are finding S2000's for 10k?? :dunno:

To the OP, Miata's are definitely fun cars! especially with an LS1 swap. I'd Rock one in a second.

Hell no. When I had the S2K folks would joke with me that I drove a miata. I actually think they are decent rides but there's no car more female.

If people argue about your sexual orientation, get a Miata and put those arguments to rest

yeah I find it funny people who think it is gay. I am looking at a coupe convertible right now as a summer car.

I am looking for either an S2K or Miata.

this pretty much sums things up nicely, until the OP makes it some sort of a monster miata, its a vag repellent

I wouldnt drive one its a little to girly for my taste. What would bother me most is telling someone what i drive i would have a 50/50 chance of being laughed at (reference to the poll) but to each there own.

Fucking awesome. Put winter tires on it and you have a drift machine.

We drive ours year round and it's pretty good in the winter. With a set on good winter tires mounted I had no issues with all of the snow around Christmas time and because the car is so neutral and balanced you won't have a bad oversteer situation unless you ask the car to do it.

Low ground clearance is the biggest issue followed by the assured death or disfigurement if you are hit by anything that weighs more than 1000lbs. The heater takes it's time in the winter but we do run with a hardtop so it becomes bearable and a bra is needed to stop the rock chips on the front end.

I bought one for my fiance and drive it occationally. It is definately not the most masculine car in the world though. But with 240whp it can leave a lot of "manly" cars in its dust.

Thanks for the response boys. I was considering it since I just need a daily driver that's cheap on gas.

What you gotta do is:

1. Sell the bike
2. Sell the neon
3. Buy a WRX
4. I'll navigate for you
5. ????
