View Full Version : Help pick a summer car

I have been looking at a summer car. Although over the last few years I have been looking at different vehicles (M3's, Evo's) I have figured out what I like.

I want a summer/fun car. I dont want to trade in my current car for one super car, it would piss me off day to day and I would be freaked out about wrecking/scratching it as I park downtown and drive to work everyday.

I have been thinking about getting something with a convertible.

Some of my thoughts have been:

1.) Miata
2.) S2000
3.) Mustang
4.) Old M3

I want it to be reliable, and not retarded expensive to fix.

I dont want to spend more than $20,000 and would like to stay in the $10k-$15k.

Any suggestions? I think most likely I would like an S2000 but there is one for sale in the marketplace right now that is $22,500.00 for a 2002. Seems like a lot of coin for an old car.

Out of those cars it has to be the S2000; I bought one last summer and I couldn't wait to drive it every day. Power was decent, handling comparable to a gokart, definately the funnest car on your list.

what did you pay. $20,000 seems like a STUPID lot of money for a 7 year old car that was $30,000 new

I was asking you what you paid, I saw them 1 year old with low clicks for 32,000 in Vernon when I lived there. I assumed that was close to list.

This thread is really helpful so far. :banghead:

s2000... so much fun to drive and it should be reliable due to it being a honda!

yea out of the list, the s2000 would be your best bet.

I don't know a whole lot about BMW's, but wouldn't that rule out the M3?

Otherwise, I think the Honda is your choice, unless you can live with having a gutless, feminine, but still fun to drive car with the Miata...

what year are you talking about? AP1? AP1V2? AP2? AP2V2? since when was the s2000 30k new? your assumption of a new s2000 costing 30k cant be more wrong. A simple check at honda.ca would give you that answer (as posted)

He saw a used one, for a year, with low mileage at 32k but guessed that one brand new would cost less... That's good logic.

if you're not too picky about RHD, there are great cars for ranging from 4-14k, gives you a lot more options

i saw few e36 m3 converts for sale on kijiji/craigs/autotrader, i would recommend a 98-99, however you said you wanna stay under 20 so maybe get a 94-95 so you have some extra cash for maintenance and repairs...

From that list S2000 without a doubt.

Add another one for the S2000.

It's a fun car, just a little slow!

S2000 if you can afford it.
Miata if you can't!

honestly, i would go with an MR2. i know its not on the list, but you can get them relatively cheap now, even LHD, if they are built properly, it can be pretty reliable. theyre not convertible but most have t-tops. just throwing it out there.

S2000 for sure, second pick would be the e36 m3.

S2000 is your best compromise.

or you can look at that Skyline with the blowoff "walves".

The gearing and HP of the S2000 make it so that it hits top speed very quickly. The S2000 is a fast car if you keep the revs in the power band. I’ve owned a 400hp CTS-V and the S2000 was fine by me. The way people refer to cars like the S2000 as slow must all be driving F1 road cars. But this is beyond, so that wouldn’t surprise me.

Well, I've owned one, and owned it's bigger brother so I feel I'm pretty qualified to comment.

Yeah, you have to drive the piss out of it to move it quick. I didn't mind that, but my Evo destroys my old S2000 in every way, and it's way easier to get the power out of it.

As for top speeds, well, the NSX was king of that. I don't think I'll ever drive faster in my life than I did in that car.

I couldn't agree more. The S2000 is not a FAST car like STi's, or Evo's, etc, but it is certainly no slouch. I wouldn't call it a slow car, that's for sure. It's still quicker than most cars on the road.

Man, S2K is a quick car, but it is by no means fast. Maybe by 2000 standards, but not today. A Cobalt is faster than the S2K man.
Just go on the highway and try to do some overtaking. You have to downshift 3 time just to have enough power to overtake someone.

Edit: That being said though, the point of the S2K is not to be fast...
