That thing looks heavy, can't be good for the small car. Very cool though.

What a shit box, I was thinking they had a cool purpose built vehicle and not some headlight ready to fail, rust bucket from the Cambrian shield.

There is another street view company called Earthmine:

Far better wheels as well:

they just need the thing to drive around and take pictures as it drives, how purposebuilt do you want it to be?

a base model cobalt would suit the purpose well enough and probably be better on gas than the vans they used to use when it was first launched.

I guess... but isn't this google we are talking about?
Not like they are strapped for cash or anything...

I suppose that's how you stay rich though, use shit boxes that look like they've been through hell.

They may have alot of money but for a service they provide for free do you really expect them to spend the money on a specially equipped escalade?

I wonder how many grow ups Google streetview will find in the city! hahaha

I'm curious if they have a system that tells them where to drive...

Here is a pic of the camera that Immersive Media (Calgary Based) supplies to Google.
Its the Dodeca 2360, 11 lenses. $45,000 US for the system.
http://www.antoniosimonetti.it/wp-content/gallery/dodeca2360/dodeca.jpg
This is the system that Google used initially in the states, I wonder if it is the same camera they use here in Canada in the car top casing?

Saw this baby in Douglas Dale today in the S.E.

I was just thinking, with all that equipment, not only do they have to have that expensive rig for photography, but like... That Ford Focus or whatever has to have TERABYTES of on board storage to record all the data...

At less than $100 per TB, I'm sure Google can pay for all the storage they need.

Bump! - saw one of these today on Glenmore Trail around 9am. Eastbound from Crowchild to Deerfoot at around 105kph ... odd, I would have figured they'd have to go slower for good image capture. Turned north on Deerfoot and of course then was going about 80 instead.
