All Form of Rigs Welcome so long as you have front and rear tow points, good tread on your tires and Low Range on your transfercase. 31" Tires are recommended. Bring a bag lunch.

Reports have shown there is still alot of snow in the area.

Meeting Place: Glenmore Circle Esso Gas Station 500-3200 Glenmore Trail SE - located just west of Barlow Trail.

Meeting Time: 9AM for a probable 9:30AM departure time. We'll convoy to the trailhead to airdown and make final preparations.

I should be able to make this one (finally).

Hoping for a stocker friendly run though - a 1991 Exploder with open diffs and no fancy bits.

There will be scratches anywhere you go. First run of the season is always like that with the trees and branches drooping from winter snow. 3 Coats of turtle wax helps though. I usually get 1 1/2 and Im tired hahahaha. Such a big truck.

If anyone has a chainsaw, Im going to see if I can get mine going. There will likely be some clearing, but I got the winch and snatch block, etc.

LOW RANGE is a must. You WILL power out on top of the world in High-Range. MUD-Terrains is recommended if anyone is considering fisher east. Couple buds were out there on ATV's last week and they said it was really wet.

Scratches smatches. Bring 'em on.

And low-range I have. Big ground clearance (well, more than 10"), lockers, and mud terrains I do not.

Can I ask who these 'whole bunch of people' are? The thread you posted only has one guy saying some people are going. Is there somewhere this run is being discussed?

As long as it's that weekend, I don't care when I go. There is probably lots of groups going both given that is opening weekend for McLean :) Been meaning to meet Alak and others on this board from runs I missed though...

Other than plugs, wires, and fluids and some reading about the lower intake manifold bolts, I've managed to actually think about buying tow hooks.

Yep, that's right. I thought about it. :D

Of course, I'll probably have to do something about it before May 2/3.

Im working on my bumper, mark 2 next week as this bumper turned into a fail bumper, mainly because my welding skills are none. Although Im pretty proud of myself cuz I did a half-assed job.

Tow Hooks are usually a good idea. The folks who dont have em, usually suffer quite a bit of damage before they realized they should have just spent the $20 on them.

We might have to go in multiple groups. Im showing alot of interest from the Land Rover Club. I think we should meet somewhere in perhaps SW calgary and caravan to the trail head. It will be crazy busy at the store.

Tarzan
04-20-2009, 02:02 PM
Holly crap is there alot of interest in the opening weekend at Mclean. I got the same impression from the yotatech site that few were going but they say 7-8 rigs are in. Our Nissan club is also planning a run for that Sunday and I know one guy is camping there so he's in for two days. We camped there at Easter and there's still alot of snow around so it will be very wet, muddy and slick. A stocker run will be very challenging much like it was last year. I am still on the fence as to which day and what group to hook up with. It may be a good idea to split up if there are more than 10 vehicles. Best approach might be to take two groups to Quirk Ridge from opposite directions (Fisher West/Sylvester) meeting at the field then head out the way the other group came in.

Isnt the Esso by the Dairy Queen and stuff? I probably drive by there everyday and never noticed it.

Either that or Flying J's and take 22X. I think glenmore will be faster though.

I think we should maybe meet up really early and aim for an early departure. If theres as many trucks as I think theres going to be - considering the fact i think a couple Land Rovers are coming too - it could take quite a while to run a trail.

Are we still go for top of the world?

Either one works for me, it was a suggestion. Alak, maybe put up a roll call so we know how many trucks are coming. I have at least one other buddy in his truck coming.

Hey all, I'm new(ish) to the scene and am definitely in... I have a fairly stock 02 Xterra (31" BFG AT KO's with low hanging pretty stuff removed) and have put it through its paces at Waiporous, Mclean and Burnt Timber without incident so far....

I'd love to wheel with a good crew, learn more trails and push her a little further knowing I have recovery support and will happily help those in need as well.

Please confirm the meeting spot for Sunday and I'll be there.

Thanks,

We should definately rendezvous at a fuel station closer to 22X. There we can fuel up and do some last minute checks.

Then we'll convoy to the trailhead to air down.

I just dont want to meet at the mclean store, because everyone else will and there will be like a millionty trucks there.

I might be going to Wiaprous this weekend for a test run on sunday. I want to make sure my new lockers and winch are working properly. That and I havent driven the rover in awhile. it was down for 2 weeks.

Wiaprous is a good place to dick around without any worry. I've yet to run margret lake, so I'll be planning to go up that way.

I should be on par to go out this sunday if anyone wants to join me. Just a couple last minute things to do to the rover and double check everything.

Best place to meet up besides the store is out in Bragg Creek at the Shell gas station. Bragg Creek is the funnel for all directions when coming from Calgary. Some of us will have to meet you in Mclean as we are camping there for the weekend. Does anyone in the group have a ham license and radio?

We ended up at margret lake, which was a little scketchy on the way out for the folks with mud terrains. One truck went off trail at one point, but managed to get out under his own power.

There was a bit of mud, but the ground is still fairly frozen. There was alot of snow. Which means, theres going to be lots of snow in mclean this weekend.

That White Land Rover is one of the 'drive around the world' prepared rovers from a few years back. www.drivearoundtheworld.com Its rare to see a fully kitted rover round here, especially one with some adventure experience.

I've never air'd down before in the rover. I run about 40PSI in these puppies - supposed to be like 70 but it rides like a chuckwagon. Might pump it up because it rides like a chuckwagon anyways.

But last sunday I witnessed the power of 18PSI. Mind you, he was on 16" rims versus my 18's.

"Hey guys. There was a check stop between Bragg Creek and Mclean this morning, and it sounds as if there's a good chance that there will be one again tomorrow morning. They were handing out lots of tickets for windshiels, fender flares, etc. So, I was wondering, for those of us who are going wheeling tomorrow, if it wouldn't be better to meet at the Bragg Creek Shell, and then let someone with a totally roadworthy truck go first to call us if the road is clear??"

I'm thinking this might not be a bad idea, meeting at the gas station in Bragg. I'll give CelicaST-162 a call in the morning and confirm for the people meeting on Glenmore.

Yeah I split a CV boot so I have to repair that (not a small job). Since Im there, I might as well pull the half-shafts and do the axle seals. I also had problems with the fuel injection, related to one of the 02 sensor wires that got a little close to the front propshaft. Theres a couple little things to do, but might be a couple weeks before its back up again since work is piling up.

If you shop about and are willing to put in some work on your own, you should be able to get a truck for your build for well under a grand. Drop a grand into it from there and you would have a pretty capable rig for not very much money.

The biggest problem then is actually finding the time to take it out, or get any work done on it for that matter.

In my case, the truck ran me less than $500. $150 of work later, she is ready to roll on the road. Now all I need to do is find the time to install tow hooks and get some 31" tires. And a little black Tremclad probably wouldn't hurt.

You should do a DIY thread one of these days. Sounds awesome.

Might just have to some day.

So far, there's not a lot of excitement. I bought a 1991 Ford Explorer with a manual gearbox. From there, a LOT of cleaning (and I mean a LOT - seriously the thing was gross) was involved along with an oil change, air filter, and plugs and wires.

There's still a slight knock from the front end under braking when you hit a bump, but everything is clean and tight so I have no idea what is binding. I'll probably leave this be. I could also do with a working CD player and my windshield leaks a bit (easy fix, needed warm weather).

The rest of my build, after I fix the drivers side door lock, is largely going to be guided by this: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2134768&postcount=7.

I should get something pretty capable for not much scratch at the end of the day.
