big V8s. Then I realized I wasn’t having any fun with them unless I was driving 200km/h. Went to small, nice handling, low powered imports and never looked back. I can ring them out and drive them like a maniac. Feels fast and I’m staying relatively legal.

Hahah, I suppose so, I have a fetish for big luxury coupes, I recently picked up a SC400 as well.

300CE's/E320 coupes are fantastic cars, in a special class, they were extremely expensive new, 25k+ more than a SC400 or Legend Coupe LS, which are both superior in performance, features, and arguably luxury. They are hard to find, allot of the owners hang onto them forever! JDM might be a good bet, I saw quite a few nice ones coming out of there with nice looking AMG body kits. They also hold their value very well.

A lot has changed as far as my perception of cars. It's due in part to the fact that styles and performance has changed, as well as my ability to afford newer vehicles than I could in my 20's....

I used to be all over the 86+ RX7's and Supras. Now I really wouldn't want either. I thought my 91 Z28 was the shit at the time, but now it only looks appropriate if you wear gold chains and show chest hair.

Even my dream car - a late 80's Corvette - is far less appealing. (Probably because the C5's are not THAT much more now...)

Someone mentioned DSM's. For a tuner car, I still think there is little out there that can touch it in terms of hp/$ upgrades. If I was younger, it would still be something to strongly consider.

I was also obsessed with W140 Mercedes Coupes - still really nice cars, but huge, expensive to run and kind of unreliable.

I loved 1.8T's for the longest time as well just for the fuel mileage.

And I also went through a Subaru Legacy GT phase for a bit, not to sure why though.

For me I would have to say Hondas. I liked my 94 Si Coupe and 94 delsol VTEC but I used to think they were sporty and reletively quick. Now I look at them for what they were.....Civics. Nothing special at all, slow, and horrible factory paint.

Porsche 944 Turbos.

I've spent just a little over half the money invested in that car on the M3, and it makes twice the power on pump gas. And everytime I go for a drive, I don't smell like Mobil 1. Nuff said.

Porsche air-cooled 911s. I used to think this would be the ultimate car - great styling, fun to drive, relatively simple to maintain, and not prohibitively expensive to buy or drive.

Then I bought one. It was pretty fun to drive, but it was really unimpressive, performance-wise. And after a couple of summers, I kind of wondered what the hell I'd been thinking.

I still think they look terrific. But I wouldn't want another one unless it was a turbo.

The good news is, they sure hold their value, those 2 summers hardly cost me anything.

MoDo27
04-22-2009, 05:56 PM
The sr20det 240's were popular because they were a more reliable and just as potentially quick platform as the DSM's.

However, facts are facts..a Mustang with minimal shit will fuck both of them up dollar for dollar and on an all out expenditure absolutely embarrass them.

The same thing is happening now that happened in the 90's..all the turbo imports came into North America and the Vette and Mustang sent their asses packing back to Japan (RX7,3000GT/Stealth,Supra etc etc)

EXACT same thing is going on right now with the Viper, ACR, Vette Z06/ZR1 vs GTR. The new Stang, Challenger and Camaro will take care of the rest.

I disagree. Mustangs were a little quicker stock, but it takes almost nothing to get a DSM up to 300 horses, or close to it. The "fact" is that a turbo car is always easier to squeeze more horses out of than a n/a. Besides that, it's not all about straight-line performance. A Talon will lose a Mustang in the twisties all day long...
