No sound engineer needed. It's a device called autotune. You map where the notes should be, it'll track your voice and changes and automatically correct and hit those notes for ya.

That's a big part of why I don't really listen to very much current music (or watch television or movies). Everything is so fabricated by the entertainment industry. It's all a popularity contest and people just keep eating it up and begging for more.

Autotune (and a few others) are meant to change the frequency and shift off-key notes here and there. It's a tool meant to correct pitch screwups. It isn't designed to turn just anyone into a flawless singer (they would sooner hire stand-ins and record them over the "artist" than attempt this).

While it is quite impressive, this is a common misconception, and audio engineers hate it because shitty singers will just strangle the cat for a whole track and say "oh you can just autotune that anyway right." Fact is, your base track has to be pretty good, and you can only use it sparingly, or it'll just sound like crap.

Well, you still need a sound engineer to run autotune, lest you use an amateur and end up with this. He just isn't "super busy" per se:

He starts out with "oh say can you see" with autotune off, and the engineer panics and flips it on, so "by the dawns early light" sounds totally different. Every time he is off key for the rest, it sounds like he has a frog in his throat. He's not exactly an amateur either, and that was the best that autotune could do for him.

The real secret to making shitty singers sound great is to hire a session singer to fill in for the artist on their own album, then the artist lipsyncs that on tour. Not very sophisticated :rofl:

Usually though, the artist does have talent somewhat and are just very inconsistent. In a studio, they'll do dozens of takes, and cut together the best sounding words of every take. So, the artist can repeat parts over and over and they only have to hit the correct key once, then they cut that piece into the track. Sometimes there can be up to 3 totally different takes being cut together to form a single word. It's also VERY common for them to just copy and paste repeated elements once they nail them. So, they might sing the chorus once, edit it to be perfect, then just paste it in all of the other places.

It's a pretty sad industry. I think Beyonce can sing for sure but the facts are there, most of the top songs are highly edited. A lot of the talented singers out there actually are done an injustice, but you gotta do what sells. I'm a big Lady Gaga fan, and a lot of people are quick to say "she can't sing, her songs are all digital", but this really illustrates what I'm talking about:

An easy way to check if someone can sing is acoustic radio shows or stuff like that.. not too much hardware goin' on there. That said, if you expect them to be perfect, you gotta be kidding.
