beginner camera

looking to get more into photography over the summer and am wondering if anyone can recommend a good beginner's camera. looking for something more than a P&S but not something that will break the bank.

The nikon d40 was something i was interested in a while back, but i would like to hear some suggestions from you guys.

Canon Rebel is a good start in my opinon. You could probably find a XT for under $300 somewhere.
