Hey guys, I had my class 6 road test scheduled for Wednesday but as we all know, Calgary weather is.. unexpected. :)
I got it rescheduled for this Friday *tomorrow* at 4 oclock; only problem is, now I have no way of getting it down to the registry. I was wondering if anyone in the NW (Kincora area) is willing to ride down there (Crowfoot) with me at around 3:15ish tomorrow afternoon?! (need to ride with someone that has a class 6)
I'm willing to throw some money your way ;)
Please pm me if you're up for it, I would really appreciate it!

- Alex

Darn I can't do it. I have a 6 GDL :(

You must be accompanied by a fully licenced (non-GDL probationary) driver who is 18 years of age or older and is either seated on the motorcycle with you or is following you in close proximity in or on another motor vehicle.

I'm gonna keep looking, hopefully I can find someone for this weekend, otherwise I will just get a truck and haul it down there.

I don't get it. If you bought the permit, and didn't take the test yet, how did you lose $120?

I know they changed a lot of things this year, but is it not still:

a) buy permit
b) give permit to tester

??

If they didn't take it, then can't you use it for a future exam?

***Oh yeah, it's BS that they charge you $120 now. For that price, the instructor should come to you since they obviously know that you can't ride your bike by yourself.

I'm guessing the OP paid for the test but couldn't get the bike down there for the appointment.

Just so you know, your "companion" with the class six does not have to be on a motorcycle. They can be driving / riding in a car immediately behind / beside / in front of you. I'm 99% sure of this.

Obtaining your class 6 consists of 2 things,

One, you must obtain your Test Permit (written test) from the registry. That's around 30 questions and costs about $20 .. or at least it did when I got mine. This test permit is valid for 1 year from the date you got it, and is necessary in order for you to be able to take the road test.

In order to take the road test, you must provide a bike to take the test on, at the time of your test. Test costs ~$120 and can only be booked through registries due to a new government requirement. (no more private testing)
I booked my test for Wednesday, it turned out to be a shitty day due to snow, so they re-scheduled it for this Friday (today). Unfortunately, despite of looking at all alternatives, I could not get the bike to the registry. I don't know anyone with a class 6, and I could not book a truck. (Looked at Rona, Uhaul, Discount, etc, all booked out for the weekend)
I went down to the registry, and asked the tester if it was possible for her to follow me home so I can pickup the bike.. she said they don't do that. Although I was the last appointment for the day, she wouldn't reschedule me for another day.. without having to pay for another test.
I know it's pretty much my fault for not being able to produce the bike at the time of the test, I was just sort of pissed off for her ignorance of the situation at hand..
That being said, as I mentioned before, I'll try and find someone for this weekend. Hopefully it's not a shit show again (as they predict in the forecast).

EDIT:

japan_us: I agree, for $120 they should be knocking at your door at the time of the test. It's ridiculous the order they have it in. I mean, look at the AMA safety driving courses; they come and pick you up, because it makes sense that a new driver may not be able to get around at that stage (usually class 7 driving license).

Masked Bandit: You're right, she actually confirmed this. Class 6 full that is riding with you can be in any motor vehicle, does not have to be motorcycle.

You have most everything correct in your post, however I think it is necessary to clarify a couple of things for future posters.

You have to pay the fee for the permit and that allows you one test. If you have to cancel the test, you must do it 24hrs in Advance otherwise you lose the right to test using that permit. The reason it is done this way, is because the examiner is paid for the time that they are there. So if there is an exam booked and paid for, and the guy doesnt show up (through no fault of the examiner), they arent penalized.

As far as getting the examiner to come to your home or anyone having an attitude about the amount of money or asking the examiner to bend over backwards; it is NOT, i repeat, NOT up to the examiner to make those decisions.

When the road test model changed on Jan 19, there were many small things that changed with it. For example, a test MUST start and end at a registry. It cannot start across the road, it cannot start at the 7-11 down the street. It has to start and stop there.

There are minor exceptions to that rule for professional class drivers.

Another example is that money can never change hands between the examiner and the client. It must be done at the registry.

There are many little things that have changed that have not been explained to the public. Because the government didnt explain it, there are misconceptions that arise. The examiner however, should have told you why she couldnt go to your home. That would have been the proper thing to do.

Now, that being said; there are a few registries that offer motorcycle rentals for a fee. So, even though it was a shitty situation, there are alternatives.

I got it!!!!!!!
Went into the registry yesterday and they had nothing available until Wednesday. I mentioned I took the course through Too Cool... and was able to book the test the next day! (today)
Man oh man, just in the nick of time too, I had my test booked for 6oclock and it started givin'er just about then.
Went on for a while and by the end of the test it was snowing like crazy! I'm so glad I finally got it done though! Would like to send out a BIG thanks to everyone that has helped and/or offered to help.
I'm actually going to put together a thread with all the information regarding obtaining your class 6 (and related FAQ).
Hope everyone had a great Sunday, I know I did :)

Question: In order to get your class 6, you need to provide a bike with insurance on it. Now, some insurance companies wont even let you insure it with them until you have your class 6.
So...what are some options? Borrow from a friend (dont want to do)? Anyone have a beater I can borrow =D

1. Borrow from a friend

2. Go to a registry that has motorcycles to rent for the exam

3. Find an insurance company that will insure you

dannie
04-29-2009, 11:37 PM
Any registry that uses these guys as their examiners:

http://www.roadtesting.ca/

That being said, I am unsure if they offer the rental motorcycle out of all the registries. I know for a fact they have it out of Shawnessy. The motorcycle will be available to rent starting the middle of next week.

If Shawnessy isnt in your area, call the other offices that are listed on that site.

If you've taken your riding course through too cool, you can buy a test permit from the registry on Country Hills & Sarcee Trail NW (by Superstore). This will make sure that you have the option of using one of the Too Cool bikes for the test, (don't have to worry about how you're gonna get the bike there) it's cheaper and the examinator meets you at their location (Too Cool, by the stadium). Unlike the conventional test permits, I do believe this one is pretty flexible (in regards to which day you take it on) as it doesn't have a FIXED date.

Yea TooCool also said you could use their bikes free the first time you take their test.

Palmiros
05-02-2009, 05:43 PM
Yea, too cool lets you use their bikes for the test. I don't even think they have a set limit as to how many times you can use them for the test, hopefully you'll only need one :P

Sort of.

Too Cool uses Certified Driver Testing as their examiners. If you take the course through too cool, they will go through all of this with you but; you go to any registry that Certified is affiliated with. (www.roadtesting.ca). Too cool will give you a letter that will allow for a percentage off of the cost of the road test. You go to the registry, present your drivers licence and that letter, and the registry will book you for the exam and charge you the discounted price.

You are still required to show up on the date that it is booked. If you dont show up, you will have to pay again. So, in that respect, there isnt a whole lot of flexibility.

I had my bike insured and registered before I got my class 6.
Once you have your insurance, you can register it no questions asked; who's to say you're not going to be riding as a learner, along side someone that has a class 6?

an off-topic question but when registering a vehicle do you guys do anything with the seller's name? like record it or check if it even belongs to them or anything like that, or is it just completely ignored.

dannie
05-02-2009, 07:35 PM
^ The registry requires a proper bill of sale. That bill of sale must contain:

Buyers information
Sellers information
Vehicle Information
Sale Price
Signatures of Buyer and Seller
Date of Purchase

As of January, the bill of sale that you produce at the registry, gets photocopied and scanned into the service. That way, if there is any fraudulent activity going on (ie: forged signatures etc), the AB gov can go back and look at the paperwork.

The Alberta government policy does not stipulate that the seller must be the last registered owner. So, no. Basically there is no "connecting the dots" so to speak.

That is why the sellers info is required on a bill of sale. In case anything goes wrong, the AB gov will go back and contact the seller listed.

Pretty much. Have a read thru the book before you go. Remember to pay attention to signs, uncontrolled intersections, proper way to brake, where to be in the lane etc.

Just take your time and think about what the proper way of doing things is, and you will be fine.

If you are bringing your own bike, you must have your drivers licence, valid insurance and valid registration with you. So have a peek at your pink slip and make sure its current. Same with the registration.

Oh, and it is road test season. So, book your appt ahead of time.

Some of my buddies took the road test within the last month. A few failed the first time, while others had no problem.

If you're good at following the rules of the road, and can control the bike, then you should be good to go. They're looking to see if you can control the bike in normal everyday situations (vs. the lot test which focused more on specific skills).

An example of this is the right foot going down. One of my buddies put it down at a light briefly and did not get penalized for it. The instructor said that he knew he was just keeping the bike up. When I took my lot test, a right foot down was an auto strike.

Amongst the group, the most common error (bike-wise) was forgetting to cancel the indicators. I think most (if not all) got a strike for this at one point. If you can hammer it into your mind that you need to cancel it, then you should be ok.

Oh, and one person failed for going too slow. He did his test back in early April and didn't want to go down McKnight at the speed limit because his hands were freezing. No excuses though - you have to ride at the appropriate speed.

Good luck!

I took the test a couple weeks ago and got hammered for being too slow. Didn't really make sense to me since I was only travelling a block at a time weaving through the community with lots of playground zones and uncontrolled intersections.
I had a feeling I was going to fail anyways since the tester just looked like he didn't want to be there.

I'm a bit soured with this Certified Driver Testing experience. Wonder if there is a better place or if this is the one and only.

^ Certified does lots of motorcycle testing. Its a huge part of their business. They do testing for 3 motorcycle schools and 8 (I think its 8) registries.

If you failed because you were constantly going too slow, then that is that. Going too slow is a huge no no on the bike.

I know that a lot of people get pissed because they fail their road test, be it the motorcycle or the drivers. But, you have to keep in mind that these guys do not want to fail people. It is the worst part of the job. So, if you fail, there is a legitimate reason.

I guess if the tester were a little more personable and that I didn't feel as if I'm being scolded, then the failure would of been easier to swallow.
$120 a pop doesn't help either :P

^ I know what you mean. It sucks ass. But, take it as a good lesson. You have a checklist of what you did wrong, one of the certified guys should have gone over it with you and explained it. Who knows, perhaps you learned something new that could keep you safe in the event of an emergency on the road. :)

Does anybody actually have the checklist the examiners use for the Class 6 road test? ... it would be extremely handy to have before the test to look over briefly... I remember when I did my class 5, after I passed the instructor gave me the checklist.

Wow sounds great man, thanks! Well, I called 130th SE Registry and they said it was a 2 week wait, and riverbend has the possibility of next day examination.

Only problem is I'm broke as a joke, and have to wait till Friday (payday) to book the test. So I'm hoping for this weekend or early next week. Unless someone wants to lend a brotha 120$.

In order to reclass your class 5 to a 56, you need to have your Ab driver licence, a second piece of ID (SIN, Alberta Health Care, Credit Card... just one of those), the permit that says you passed the knowledge exam and the permit that looks exactly the same; that says you passed to road test. They must be readable and they had to have been completed within the last year.

I know what you mean, I took mine in the middle of a snowstorm, a day before I had to leave for 4 weeks.. for work..
I'm pretty sure I would have had it on my mind this entire time, should I have not taken it that day. :bigpimp:

In order to reclass your class 5 to a 56, you need to have your Ab driver licence, a second piece of ID (SIN, Alberta Health Care, Credit Card... just one of those), the permit that says you passed the knowledge exam and the permit that looks exactly the same; that says you passed to road test. They must be readable and they had to have been completed within the last year.

you dont need to have your bike learners to get a class 6

^ I didnt say that you did.

I said that in order to change your licence from a class 5 to a class 5 6, you must successfully complete the knowledge test and road test.

That being said, there is no such thing as a bike learners licence.

Good idea to do it in that order..

Somehow/some way/for some reason I purchased my bike nine months before I 'have yet' to get my license (Saturday).

^ lol.. I have had my bike for a month now, and I still haven't taken the test.. i haven't dropped it either though and I didn't even take the riding courses. I'm thinking of doing that either at the end of the summer or next summer when I have more cash.

question, i didnt take driving school though i have years expirience riding bike back home, and im driving car in calgary for 9 years now i dont think theres a difference in road sign when your driving a bike so im thinking may be ill just take the exam,is there a problem with that?:dunno:

no there is no problem with that. You'll just need to go pass the learners first then you can book a road test.

Just wondering if anyone has done a class 6 road test on a friend's bike? IS there a catch to it? and does my friend need to be there as well?

I sold my bike :(

^ Nope, you just have to provide the valid registration and Insurance for the bike. Your name doesnt have to be on it at all and your friend doesnt need to be there.

^sweet. I confirmed that with the registry as well today.

My test is tomorrow morning at 10 AM. Let's hope the examiner does not have a problem with a modified loud exhaust :D

^ The only issue you may have is a small one. Some examiners use hand signals to tell you where you are to turn at etc. Some use a headset. If they do use the headset, you may have an issue with being able to hear the examiner telling you where you are going next.

But, that being said... a modified exhaust will not cancel the test. Its 100% ok to take that bike out.

^ I just passed my test with no marks taken off at all!! :) WOOo.. too bad I sold my bike already.

MY examiner used a headset and I didn't have any problems with hearing him so thats good. I got kinda scared when I first saw my examiner since he looked like a hard-ass but he turned out to be a chill guy lol. He even waited 5 minutes at the beginning of the test for me to jump start my bike lol since its batteries were dead.

I will post a picture of the checklist sheet they use during the test to serve as a guide for others.
