Can the SMG be operated fully automatic? as in without shifting gears? just curious...

Yes it can, there's a full auto mode with 5 programs, but it's not exactly smooth. Feels nothing like an automatic. Every chick that I've had drive the car gets confused with the auto mode haha.

If you HAVE to use auto mode, A3 is the mode to use.

so there are different options for Auto? how does A3 differ from A1 or A2 or whatever... ? thanks for the input.

A1 and A2 starts from 2nd gear, and shifts REALLY slow. A3 shifts at a comfortable speed, so there's not a huge gap between each gear... feels the most "human".

A1 is the most fuel efficient. It shift as soon as it can.

A5 will keep the revs up so that throttle response is better.
