Are you sure your monitor is adjusted properly?

Adjust the settings on your monitor to what you feel comfortable looking at.
Also if possible put a desk lamp or some other light source behind the monitor.

Another one is to close your eyes for a minute every 30 minutes and slowly adjust to the light again, don't close for a minute then look at your monitor right away.

Do everything ergo based you can but after that you should be trying to take breaks from time to time, 2 hours on 20 mins off minimum.

In addition to closing your eyes 1 minute out of every 30, when you reopen them you should focus on something decently far away for 20ish seconds, and maybe try sitting a bit farther back from your monitor.

You could get some of these too ;) Gunnar opiks (http://gizmodo.com/5046530/lightning-review-gunnar-optiks-eye-strain+reducing-computer-glasses)

I work at an optometrists office and the doctors usually recommend that people with eye strain and tired eyes do some warm compressions for 15 minutes at the end of the day to help with the strain.

get a warm/hot cloth and place over closed eyes for 15 minutes.. see how you feel at the end of it.

I don't know if this affects eye strain, but some types of lights combined with monitors refreshing at 60Hz can be weird to look at and you don't notice until you change it. Maybe try changing the refresh rate on your monitor (if it supports it).

Desktop -> Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Monitor

Hopefully someone can confirm if this may help, or if I'm full of s***.

This is a big problem with CRT monitors and florescent light fixtures. Get an incandescent desk lamp in increase the refresh rate as high as it will go.

try sitting up straighter so that your head is slightly above your monitor and you don't have to open your eyes as wide, so that your sort of looking down on your screen as opposed to looking directly at it if that makes sense. Then your eyes don't have to let in as much light and should help reduce strain, works well for me.
