Just got build 7075 on my notebook last night.. seems pretty good.

Running Autodesk Map 3D 2010 flawlessly. No driver issues, and the best part, an embedded Win XP Virtual Machine.

Any issues people are having?

This is RC not beta

HillBilly

not the BETA... I have heard this is the copy being released in OCT.

with a technet subscription you get the download 2.6GB. and you also get a keygen from microsoft for it. Load as many as you like. It has a 1 year life...

Ya, I've been running the RC for a couple days, so far I like it much better than Vista. It's good till March 1, 2010. It's free for anyone to download straight from Microsoft.

The current version (directly from microsoft) is build 7100 and is a Release Candidate. It is essentially what will be the final build (pending any last minute changes/fixes) released later this year. It will be good to use unrestricted, technically, till June next year. Although, the rumour is that it will start being difficult to use past March 1 (It'll shut down every two hours).

Get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/

Overall Windows 7 has been stable, and I've had very few issues. Most drivers are installed automatically and has run quite smoothly. Very little has caused me any issues; other than the fact that I'm pushing the minimum specs.

what have you guys found for software that doesn't work or install properly? (disregarding the XP V machine option)

the only things I have found to not work are;

Trimble Geomatics Office
Trimble Coordinate System Manager
PDF Factory
Microsurvey 2008
Divestco Geowiz
Periscope for AutoCAD

Just finished installing Ultimate. Looks pretty slick and runs good. Had to find a sound driver which I expected as I had to when I upgraded to Vista. But now my DVD-RW drive doesn't work at all, my secondary DVD-rom however works fine, woo woo.

Looks cool, hopefully I notice a difference in performance from Vista, which I never had any issues with really.

oh and this annoys me for msn, if i hover over it on the windows bar, it shows my display pic and messenger to the right of it, why the fuck does it have to display my display pic? if I click on it, it just pulls up the main messenger...useful, not.

With old beta Windows 7 (build 7000) my thinkPad T60 was BSOD after 10 min of watching video on battery (tdx.sys craps out). Windows XP and Vista works fine. Will check with RC (7100) build.

RC has been pretty solid for me. But I guess it still can't include every driver under the sun. It recognized nothing on my HP laptop and has to use vista drivers from HP site.

Other than that, look good and much quicker than Vista but slower than XP.

BTW, anyone tried this on a netbook?

Kavy

Netbook = not so good

I am running this on my Dell XPS and i love 7. I hope they clean it up a bit more and i will walk away from Hackintosh.

I'm running the 7000 version on a macbook pro, gotta say, for a beta its pretty good, haven't had any real issues, but only use it for some games, so far runs Crysis, Far Cry 2 and Left 4 Dead fine, runs better than when I had Vista 64bit on here, just wish they would allow an option to turn off all the bullshit "you may be at risk" "is your computer secure" "you may have a virus".

EDIT: oh yea, as for the RC and the 1 year testing license, I'm sure it can be removed, I removed all the activation bullshit from this copy.

For the people that are running Windows 7100 RC on their laptops what video card are you currently running?

If you have an Intel based video card did you install your driver or did the computer automatically install it for you? reason why I'm asking is because my computer automatically installed the driver, but my start-bar always flickers and its so annoying!

installed RC (7100) instead of Beta (7000) and I should say - I am impressed! The issue with video playback and BSOD on my T60 got fixed (though I suspect video driver's settings could have been a culprit) I have 2Gb of DDR2 ram, 120Gb SATA HDD and Centrino Duo CPU (T2400, 1.83GHz) - Windows 7 Aero theme runs smoothly - no problem whatsoever... yet...:D

Had little issue with FingerPrint reader- Windows 7 installed its own driver for FPR but software supplied by Lenovo won't work with it! Had to go to the FingerPrint reader manufacturer and download software from them.

Video card is ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 256Mb

I tried 7100 on Aspire One and found that not all Intel chipset and graphic driver are loaded properly.

The graphic driver was updated by Windows Update.

The chipset driver is tougher, I have to manually update them from the 2006 MS version to 2008 Intel Vista version.

After all the driver update, I no longer get random BSOD on it.

IMO, while MS is having the goodwill for people to keep running 7 til March 2010, they better get the pricing right if they want to stop other OSes from invading the netbook market.

Moblin and Android can be big if Windows 7 Starter isn't free.

I just did a clean install of 7100 on my machine last night and I am super impressed.

Never had to install any drivers, it loaded drivers for my video card but I updated to the Latest Nvidia Drivers for Windows 7

I have to say I am super impressed. I never tried Vista on my home machine but I will be buying this when it goes retail. I have yet to have a single problem or glitch. There is typical windows stuff I don't like but if you have to use Windows this is what you want to use.

Just in case your curious..

Motherboard: Gigabyte EP45-DS4P
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duro 3.0Ghz 6MB E8400
RAM: OCZ 4x1GB PC-8500 1066mhz
HDD: WD 500GB 7200rpm SATA II 32MB
Video Card: eVGA Nvidia 9800 GT

Gave me a windows performance rating of 5.9/7.9

I also updated to the 7100 RC 64bit release, its a little bit slower than the 32bit version for loading up and shutting down, but its great everywhere else, I gotta say, coming from a windows hater, it looks like microsoft has now got it right, don't use mine for much, but haven't had any problems, I still prefer Leopard, but using 7 isn't a bad alternative when it calls for it, I'm actually looking forward to the retail version of it to see what thats like compared to this RC.

Been running 7100 since it was released. Only issue i have is real weird one with media player. I run 3 monitors with 2 video cards. If I move the media player to a montior which is not attached to the primary video card media player stops playing the video.

Overall it work great. I think i'll actually buy a copy of this when its released

It probabbly does that in any OS if the VC is being used to decode the video.

Been running it since beta, now on RC. Awesome OS.

Kind of newb questions here.. I want to install this over Vista Premiium on my Toshiba laptop.. all reading leads me to believe it should be okay to do so, anyone have any input?

I will backup my laptop first before installing obviously.

Also, my laptop is a Toshiba, and never came with a Vista disc. So I don't have the option of re-formatting or re-installing windows. Given the Windows 7 installation goes smoothly, I shouldn't need a Vista disc (I hope) I will just use the Windows 7 until retail comes out. I have a year until it would expire...

From everything I've heard it's worth making the switch over, and everyone in this thread seems happy with it thus far.

But would it be a bad idea to put this ontop of Vista on a primary home laptop with no Vista disc?

I've been running 7100 for a while now without any problems and it runs MUCH better than Vista on my wife's laptop (which has higher specs than mine), so you should be okay.

If you're worried about something going wrong, use Clonezilla (http://clonezilla.org/) (it's opensource and works fantastic) to backup your entire drive and restore if necessary.

Thanks for the reply.

I think I'm going to give it a shot, backup my laptop first and then install Windows 7. I pray everything goes smoothly because if for some reason something goes wrong, I have no Vista disc to re-install windows.

RC1's driver is hardly complete. Most chipset still use Vista drivers from 2006. Mine bluescreen so often that it caused hd corruption to the point that it can't be repair. Back to XP it went and as solid as ever.

Operating systems are getting more bloated than new cars now adays. You should have more options to chose from. IMO the best OS is the one that you don’t notice. I want a platform to install programs on. That’s it. Nothing fancy. Something simple and basic that will never crash. I don’t want a gaudy interface and features I never asked for that mess everything up. Just like sometimes you want a car with seats, a steering wheel, an engine and manual windows. Something reliable that has little chance of breaking down.

Have you tried Windows 7? IMO it is nothing like what you have described. I have yet to have a crash and it came with nothing but the OS and IE8 bundled with it. If you don't like windows there is also a ton of Linux distor's that are lite and simple. I have one running on my netbook that is awesome and takes up around 2gb of flash drive room.

It's called Slackware Linux. You're welcome.

In my opinion Microsoft has done a pretty good job of modularizing most of its new features, to reduce overall bloat and maintain a very feature rich OS. I was a late adopter of Vista, but I became a huge fan. This time around I'm an early adopter of Windows 7 and find it to be excellent as well.

Build 7600 has reportedly been leaked, and it should be the RTM build:

http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2009/07/first-screenshots-of-windows-7-build-7600-leak.ars

The build string is "7600.16384.090710-1945," which indicates that it was compiled just a few days ago: July 10, 2009, at 7:45pm. Microsoft only increments the build number when it reaches a significant goal, and the only one left is the RTM milestone. The last builds that were leaking were all 72xx builds, so such a large bump is suspicious, but at the same time it is something Microsoft would do to signify that this is the final build.
