So I'm gonna purchase a used car. How do I protect myself from unscrupulous sellers???

By not using carfax

Use carproof instead. The burden is still on yourself to check everything... can't really be "protected".

I guess my question is, what else can I do besides carproof and a lien check to protect myself?

Mechanical inspection is a good start.

I'm more concerned about the financial end of it. So many scams on kijiji these days!

Well, if you are buying a car and worried about being financially screwed, all you have to worry about it actually getting your car (no 3rd party escrow), making sure no money is owed on it (lien check), make sure the guy selling it is actually the owner, and check the legal title (trying not to sell salvage at full price).

If you were selling the car there's a lot more ways to get financially screwed over.

Carproof ($50) is only good for one report?

That's correct, but well worth it. If you have AMA, you can do carfax reports through them just to help you narrow down your choice, then when you think you've found the one, do the carproof.
