i pulled up to an intersection with lights and turned onto the main street where i was pulled over less than a block later doing 50kms/h

when the cop gave me the ticket i told him i didnt see a sign and he said there is one, so i drove the route after getting the ticket, as did the officer, i noticed him drive the route and pull back into his spot. so i stopped again and explained i drove it again and didn't see a sign. I asked if he could show me the sign, he refused, said he was busy and to fight it in court.

was said to be a playground zone, but i didnt see any signs when i turned onto the street, so i went back and checked again.... can anyone else see playground signs or speed reduction signs?

also a side question, for these pictures when i bring them to court, how should i present them, should i go to a photo place and have them printed in normal photo size? or would larger be better? and suggestions would be good

pics are in sequence, like stop animation

how can a driver be expected to be watching the signs on the other side of the road pointed the other way while driving?

i thought when you turn onto a main street its 50 unless otherwise posted.

its because you were already in a playground zone... the zone starts on the road you turned off of, there is 2 schools right there.. so further up the street you were on would have had a sign

that sucks, i thought when you turn onto a street it has to be labeled as a playground zone when to turn onto it.

i'll have to research this more, because i think there should be a sign at the intersection letting you know what the speed is or at least that you are still in a playground zone.

with all the layers of fence i could tell the court i thought i was driving through a maximum security prison and was afraid of an inmate attack and wanted to move through in a quick and safe fashion?

i don't think its too much to ask that there should have been a sign at the intersection notifying that you are turning onto a street that is also a playground zone.

i guess ill have to see what the court rules

it was the first time in my entire life driving that street/area, i guess this is the hard way of learning about calgary's playground zones.

Playground zones tell you where they begin and end as they drive. Whether or not you turn, it will tell you when it ends....as far as I know anyways. I've definitely gone by that.

I was riding there just about 10 minutes ago, getting some practice for my class 6, and there are playground zone signs there.. They are the big yellow ones. haha jk

If you go further down they are there, it is a big playground zone.

Yah, that is your best bet, GL. Always be careful around Cardinal Newman, you'll notice everyone slows right the fuck down when they get around there.

Pretty much what everyone else said. Once you enter a playground zone, it doesn't end until you see the back of the playground sign on the other side of the road.

:werd: I used to live right up the street from there. The playground zone starts a ways before your first picture and ends after the last picture. Its a long ass playground zone, shitty deal about the ticket.

I can see how you missed the sign, but how did you miss that huge playground and school? Whenever there's a playground there will be a playground zone. Same goes for schools.

Basically every school or playground is 30km/hr, I don't think you need a sign to tell you that.
All the green space, fence, and school should let you know to go slow, specially if it is daytime.

Plus just think about that.. You want a sign, INSIDE the zone letting you know, you are still inside the zone...? WTF really?

ATTENTION:
You are still in the playground/school zone!

:thumbsdow
You were speeding where you should not have been, man up and pay your ticket/get your demerits/premium increase.
If you don't think you should get the ticket, don't speed next time. Pretty simple eh?

hahaha yah sorry good luck fighting that one... there are 30 km signs all over that area coming to/from mckenzie lake house, and both ends of the main drive... I don't know why you would bother spending 500 on points for this

Print out Rage2's rants on playground zones so you have some info for when you're in court.

That's words to live by when you are driving in unfamiliar territories.

And to counter what you said that did have some purpose, I've seen roads next to schools that are not marked as school zones, so you can't just assume it is a school zone because there's a school there. Sometimes they aren't (generally I've seen this where the property of the school is entirely fenced in, and usually junior high/high schools). I've noticed this a number of times, can't think off the top of my head where specifically.

In your last photo, you can see very clearly above the end of the fenceline, a small yellow sign that says "END OF PLAYGROUND ZONE".

You're screwed.

yeah, it was my first time in my life ever on that street and the first time ever in my life finding out that playground zones existed, i only knew of school zones and i thought they were not in effect on weekends.

ive only been living in the city for 2 years, lots of city driving is still new to me, i didnt do my driver training here or any testing for driving here so it just never came up.

and i somehow missed the signs while i was trying to find out on my gps where the heck i was, and paying attention to the road ahead rather than random signs on the side of the road.

i don't ever drive residential, i think thats why i never have come across a playground zone, i stay in the core of the city.

and the comment about seeing the end of the zone, thats great, but by the time you see that sign you are already pulled over, so thanks.

Hey man you asked if we saw any playground zone signs, i'm just pointing them out.

There's two schools that are immediately beside 4th St NW north of 64th Ave NW.

There is NO school zone there. I just drove past it today.

Its good to know that there are cops enforcing the playground zone in McKenzie Lake.. if only they would catch the soccer moms speeding on Mountain Park Drive....

why do you say it is good? I live right in mckenzie and I think that playground zone is quite retarded, only time it serves much purpose is around 5pm catching all the assholes who live in cranston who speed through mckenzie to take a short cut... but otherwise you have 3 fences, a set of lights and a pedestrian light crosswalk and on top of it you can't convert it to at least a school zone?? typically just a cash cow... but w/e...

quick question : how much was the ticket and how many points were given ?

Also is Uturn illegal in Calgary when not posted by a sign such as this ?

i just got out of a playground speeding ticket last month.

I moved to saskatoon from calgary over 3 years ago and when i was back visiting family i got ticketed for going 50 in a 30. so i fought it and won.

How?

Simply forgetting thats all.

In saskatoon playground zones are 30KM but only from 8-5 on weekdays and from september to june. so they are all 50 on weekends/evenings and in the summer. this was enough to confuse me and haphazardly i forgot. i am being perfectly honest and it was a simple mistake which the judge agreed with but also a reminder to pay attention to what city you are in.

SGI also tosses out all tickets from photo radar and red light cameras recieved from other provinces. And i usually drive well within the limits and very safely (no demerits no accidents) but if i know theres one up ahead when im there...

If I'm not mistaken (and don't take my word to court if you get a ticket, lol)... U-turns are illegal at intersections that have signal lights, and signs, and illegal anywhere between intersections, but ARE legal at intersections that have no signals (alleyways are also considered intersections)

What I meant was that I would like to see more enforcement on Mountain Park Drive just because I live in a playground zone.. but I usually never use the McKenzie lake drive mainly because of that extremely long playground zone. I agree with you that its a little stupid to have lights in a playground zone.. the stop sign worked fine while it was there.

However, I don't think they should convert it to school zone.. just because there are always kids playing there after 5.

If the intersection is controlled just by stop signs, yield signs, or no signs at all, then u-turn is legal.

I believe it has to be at an intersection to be legal, but I'm not certain on that one and don't feel like looking it up.

I think it can only be at intersections. My friend got a ticket for doing that, we were going to the bar and we were looking for parking spots. The parking spots were all angled parking and there was a few spots open on the other side of the road so he signaled and than pulled into the one of the spots. Cop said he pulled an illegal u-turn but let him off easy with a improperly crossing highway bylaw ticket or something.

wow, thanks for that painfully obvious conclusion, that really makes the situation much easier for me to understand, wow, you're right now all i gotta do is just not speed through playground zones.

its all makes sense now...
