CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Calgary Police Service is urging all Calgarians to be
wary of suspicious phone calls after at least four local
business owners received threats and demands of money through
a virtually untraceable VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
telephone call.
In each offence, a Mandarin-speaking business owner received
VoIP calls from a Mandarin-speaking man threatening to harm
their family if large sums of money were not wired to an
account in China.
The first report to Calgary police was made at approximately
11 a.m., today, Wednesday, May 20, 2009. Several other North
American cities, including Edmonton, Vancouver and Toronto,
have had reports of a similar scam. The investigation to date
indicates that the threats are unsubstantiated and that the
phone calls are a hoax.
No Calgarians are known to have sent money to this account.
If you receive a threatening telephone call in any language:
- Contact police immediately;
- Record the caller ID information and details of the call;
- Do not provide or confirm personal information; and
- Do not send money or give financial information.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call in any language should
contact police immediately at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers
at 1-800-222-8477.
