Ok so here's my issue... I need some help with purchasing a car.. I can't make up my mind... I am interested in alot of vehicle's out there like a mr2, integra, 240sx, 180sx, camaro, 300zx, or last but not least... Miata... But only to turbo the S%$t out of it.. (must be cheap too lol). My issue is that what i really want (240sx LHD with a SR20DET) are all beat or way way to much money.. Im trying to be patient but have opened my options.. Here are the needs and wants of my $5000 summer car...

Needs:
-MUST BE $5000 OR BELOW... CHEAPER THE BETTER
-Must be fast and fun
-Must be in good condition
-Must have appeal and look clean
-Must have sunroof, t-tops, or convertible top

Wants:
-5 or 6 speed prefered
-Turbo or supercharged
-RWD is prefered
-LHD is muchly prefered

So with that said... What $5000 summer car would you purchase with that in mind.. I've come across some alright deals but what i really want doesnt seem to be out there...

Good luck finding a LHD 300z for that price.

Have you considered DSM? Eclipse GSX? or Talso TSi AWD?

i personally think you dont have a chance with any of those cars in your list for 5 grand.. not for a lhd anyways.. maybe a bone stock 240 or 180sx but even then

integra if u want it is ur best bet. not sure how much gsr's are tho

I've found numerous 240sx's and 180sx's... There is a 180sx on this board for 3500 OBO however RHD to me is a huge negitive.. And 240sx's that are 89-93's shouldnt be worth $5000... thats nuts.. The vehicles that i've had have positives and negitives and really all i want is a fast car thats gonna be worth my money that i wont get bored of.. I've had a turbo integra before and i can find a gsr for $4000 if i want it.. Im really looking for a sr20det 240sx.. im affraid if i build it myself it'll become a $10,000 project really quick lol..

Personally, I doubt you can get something that I would define as fast, for $5K.

If it is $5K, it won't be fast for long as I'm sure it's destined to break.

Up it to atleast $7k or $8k

Miata. With your budget requirements you're not gonna find much out there.

Or track down a beat Taurus SHO. Those are fun to bag on if you can get the FWD to hook up.

Everyone that ive talked to is saying 5.0L foxbody or a camaro... im not a big fan of the Foxbody and Id prefer something probably smaller with a turbo... I know i can find something.... Fast to me isn't race track fast or 11 second fast.. i just want something quick to buzz around in...

buy the best $5000 miata you can find, drive it stock, save money, turbo it next year

I know you said LHD only but Soarer I think is your only choice in that price range. They are right about that price and most are in pretty good shape. Just as much power as any of those cars or even more than the 180 and they look way more modern.

there is a dude selling a grey soarer for 5k, that's a steal considering he claims it's in great condition

but there are a tonn of choices for you
Most right hand drive fit your budget, lhd would be more pricey

180 (if you like)
240 with a sr20 (if you like)
rhd MR2 turbo (fuckin awesome)
rhd300gt (auto only, good luck finding one in good condition)

non turbo gto (only gto come awd in a non turbo model, heavy but still a great car)

there was also someone selling a toyota mark 2 tourer (1jz) engine for 5k which is as unique as you can get

you can always buy a talon tsi if you hate rhd

Try and look for an FC?

stikkyp
05-21-2009, 06:35 PM
I heard the FC's are scary to buy used when you dont knwo much about them.. im not a huge rotary guy so i wouldnt even know what to look for.. I know i was talking to a guy on a wicked convertible once.. should have bought it..

stikkyp
05-22-2009, 12:01 PM
Ok here are my choices....

1990 Mazda rx-7 convertible **$3000**

The Good:
-LHD
-5 speed
-was USA car but all inspected and no rust..
-Convertible
-A1 condition

The Bad:
-lacking in power
-no mazda dealer for parts or service in my area... 3 hr drive
-lack of rotary engine knowledge

OR

1993 Nissan 240sx SR20DET **$5500**

The Good:
-LHD
-5 speed
-SR20DET fun factor
-excellent condition
-TONS OF OTHER MODS

The Bad:
-BC car so OOP inspection has to be done
-Long trip for the hassle
-More money for the car but better car for the money..
-extra costs (hotels,3 days off work, flight costs)
-sketchy flying there on a car just to look and potentially purchase..

Thats my last 2 options.... I'm buying one of them... leaning towards 240sx with Sr20det but not liking the 3 days off of work and the extra cost for flights and hotels (around $1000 extra).... What would you buy and why???

FiveFreshFish

Where in BC is the Nissan? If it's in Vancouver, you can do it all in one day for less than $400 extra.

stikkyp
05-22-2009, 12:36 PM
i think its on the island or vancouver... Plane ticked is $130-$170 depending on day and time.. Was thinking of taking 2 days off work and going out (Gas,tickets, hotel, food, ferry ride?).. and thats if nothing breaks down.

And the rotary is so unsure.. its a low mileage US car.. seems to be in wicked shape but im not a rotary guy.. So much unknown with those cars...

That's a lot of must's for a little cash. Get an old 5.0 mustang, that's just about all I can think of and even that's stretching it.

Course you could import a car I suppose using 5 grand and hope it makes it through the summer. On the bright side, if it does, you can just throw it away when you're done!

urban.one
05-22-2009, 01:19 PM
How much cash do you have to spend? If you have only$5000 in total, then look for a cheaper car. With a car that old and especially a performance car, youre almost guaranteed to have parts break or need to repair or replace stuff. Leave yourself some wiggle room in your budget for the uneexpected.

mr2mike
05-22-2009, 02:08 PM
Buy the 5.0L or another car worth $4700
Buy a chop saw for $300

It'll be a T-top in no time. ;)

Or if you're lucky, you can find an '87 5.0 that came with t-tops. They're very rare I find. Also they tend to have flex marks on the back part of the body by the 1/4 windows. But that's the least of your concerns.

05-22-2009, 02:08 PM
sr20det IMO.

Don't settle on a car based on short term convenience. If you're planning on enjoying the car for a while why fuss over having to spend a few days to go get it? Also, I wouldn't regard flying to Vancouver to drive back a new car a "hastle" but more like "hell ya, road trip in my new car!". I bought my M3 in the US by flying down and driving it back to Calgary. It was one of the best times I've had with the car.

stikkyp
05-22-2009, 02:33 PM
That is what im thinking.. i've never been over to the West coast so i figured why not take the extra day and enjoy the mini vacation.. I'm 90% sure the sr20det is the one ill by pending he doesnt sell it before i talk to him....

There's some cheaper RHD Turbo MR2's floating around.

Unplug the MAP sensor, manual boost controller set to 14psi and go have some fun.

sxtothe240
05-22-2009, 10:31 PM
If you're buying the 240 from BC. you'll need a "in transit" piece of paper from the registry before you head down there.

and probably be a good idea to get a mechanic in van to check it out before you drive it back.

megafandrew
05-22-2009, 10:39 PM
you guy's saying a decent car can't be had for 5g obviously pay someone else to do the work on thing no? I had a 180sx that sold for 5300 and it was fast and setup on a budget, however it had a bit of body damage, not a big issue if you want to go fast though. Do what Im doing, buy a cheap ass eg or ef hatch, gut it and throw in a b18c5 or a high comp. b16a and you will have enough fun for this summer, then build all-motor or turbo it next summer! Dont think you can get an eg/ef for cheap, have a look on 780 tuners forum right now guy sold a decent eg for 500 bucks needed a motor, passed inspection

Seems a little to good to be true, but if it is then the starter motor is an easy fix.

I saw a nice 91' Skyline for $4900
The only thing I didnt like on it were the rims.

I found a 93' Skyline for $7900 on some online classifieds, the thang was built from the ground-up and was customized to be like that one on 2Fast2Furious. (Just needs blue racing stripes and a huge black spoiler...) Im pretty sure its uninsurable...

I'd go for something 2-3 thou like a 88bronco or 87-91 sierra then put a 6 inch suspension lift on it and some mudders

surprised no Integra love on this thread.

from your list I would recommend either a 240sx or an Integra GSR.

I actually miss driving my integra which btw if anyone is interested is for sale for $1500 (need some cosmetic work, 94, b16a2)
and planning to get a Type-R later on hopefully.
