Virus/Spyware software for Mac?

Ok, I am a beginner Mac user. I know that Macs are in general less prone to viruses and malware. Those of you who use Mac OS did you install any virus scan or spyware remover on your system.

Also would Firefox be any less secure than Safari? What utilities would you recommend? I have checked the Apple download site, as well as download.com.

I have my mac for almost 3 yrs now. Never installed virus/spyware protection and never had a single problem.

Macs are safer without garbage software meant for pc's.

Macs are just as vulnerable, but simply not as popular of a target. Take for example this five-month old JAVA vulnerability that Apple has still not fixed. (http://www.informationweek.com/news/hardware/mac/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=217600344) I'd highly recommend ditching Safari and using Firefox with the NoScript addon. It allows you to choose which sites can run java/javascript/flash/pdf/etc in your browser, eliminating the most common attack vectors. Other than that, stay on top of system patches and keep your applications up to date as well. Adobe Reader, for example, has multiple known critical vulnerabilities, that still aren't patched but should be someday Real Soon Now.

F-Secure just came out with a beta program for their Mac tool (http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/archives/00001686.html); if you think you need an antivirus solution for your machine, might as well give the free one a shot.

I don't run an antivirus setup on my Macbook Pro.

I'm a mac newb too and I just went to download.com and grabbed a free mac antivirus... I dunno, I've only ever run it once in a while. Never any issues.
