Looking for something that has low rolling resistance in a 26 x 1.9 that actuality has a bit of bite for the light trails

Seems like most are either off road or slick only... which I'm a huge conti fan, specifically the Jones XR

But as the GF rides daily to work, something that can get her through the pavement with less effort, but still is able to do light trails with me, would be nice!

Some people simply get two sets of rims and run them on the same bike. I know some people that run 1" road tires on their DH bikes when they want to commute :P Nothing stranger than seeing someone with 8" of travel on skinnies. Otherwise you could look into some of the dirt jumping tires. These are somewhat smoother than the rumbers/stubbies of typical tires. Maxxis Holy Roller being an example that is setup for both street use and dirt/off road.

Theres a nice lower profile tire that Kenda makes, and fairly low on the price scale too. Wish I could remember what its called but my fiances hardtail has a set on, and they are alot less agressive than the Kendas on my xc. They still offer grip but wont drive you crazy on a commute with the humming sound of a dirt tire.

MEC (Mountain Equipment COOP) has a few tires that might suit your needs. I haven't tried any of these, but they may be worth checking out:

I run the tioga city slickers, which work great on pavement and okay on gravel, but I I think I'll have epic failure on my hands on anything muddy or wet.

edit: the first tire listed is only $8.50 each and gets pretty damn good reviews. For that money you can't really go wrong even just trying them out.

I have Schwalbe Big Apple's on my Dahon and so far, I am loving it!

They're Kevlar so it's puncture-proof, it's slick which is great on pavement but has enough ridges to be grippy on gravel.

Great commuter tires if I do say so myself.

picked up some Tioga city slickers in a 1.95 running @ 65 psi

The GF can now keep up with me w/o a problem when riding bike paths... in fact way quicker just gliding downhill, and she's at least 55 lbs lighter

I bought these last year and run them at 65-70psi. Incredible difference compared to my stock tires. They are a little noisy, but still good.
