Check out this new car company.

They are specifically building a purpose built police car for police departments that will never go into civilian use.

Very nice, but the computer setup is junk.

Officers spend hours at a time on shift dealing with paperwork on their car-laptops - this is clearly not setup right for that.

Even if the panel on the dash pops up to reveal a screen (or HUD) the keyboard placement is rubbish.

I like how the music is playing called "please be patient with me" ....

Wired Magazine had a piece on this a while back. Still no actual car to look at? Thats kind of disappointing.

I would actually be tempted to ask CPS to let me check out the car if I ever got pulled over by it lol

Earliest production dates were 2011-2012 if I recall correctly.

Man, I hope these are available for civilian purchase when they're done with 'em.

Unlikely... from their FAQ

Since the E7 is made solely for law enforcement, what will we do with the used vehicles?

While conducting our market research in the initial years of our company, we found that when given a choice, agencies genuinely did not want these vehicles being used outside of law enforcement. “Command Presence” is lost when a vehicle is auctioned off for use as a taxi or worse, by someone who is attempting to create the illusion that he is in law enforcement. The vehicles will therefore be strictly limited to law enforcement sale/usage only.

Once you determine that the vehicle has reached the end of its useful life for your department, you will have a few options:

1. You may sell it directly to another agency;

2. You may enlist the help of Carbon’s database to find an agency that has expressed an interest in acquiring a previously utilized vehicle; or

3. Carbon will buy the vehicle back from you, where we will recondition and resell it, or “part it out” and recycle the remaining bits.

Their goal is to remain competitive with the police issue modified Crown Vics and Impalas.

I can't see them bothering entering the market with a vehicle that costs more than a standard issue cruiser.

I would venture to guess that a new Crown Vic + modifications costs close to (if not over) $50k.

These cars are also intended to be in service longer than your usual ~125,000km interval thats common with police forces.

I suppose the operators will be recuping the losses from the lack of end-of-life sales of the old Crown Vic's in this manner - by extending the life of the service vehicle.

Well in that case, I hope that powerplant finds its way into other vehicles that are for civilian purchase.

My biggest pet peeves with economical cars have always been
1. They feel like they're built with tissue paper and Elmer's Glue.
2. The AWESOME in fuel economy is contrasted by the SUCK in performance.

- 350 horsies, 420 lb-ft of torque... is pretty nice.

- 28-30 MPG is very respectable fuel economy.

- At 4,000 lbs, it certainly won't feel like it was made by a third grade arts & crafts class.

350 HP/420 ft-lb, 28-30 MPG, and a solid 4,000 lb curb weight in the same package? I'll take two, please!

It is a BMW power plant.

3.0L twin turbo diesel.

It is currently available in Europe in the BMW 335d and 535d models.

We dont get the 5 series diesel...but we do get the 3.0L Diesel in the 335d, and X5 xDrive35d. Here, now, in Canada.

Though it is only rated at 265hp and 425lb/ft.

The 535d is the one I'd buy. 3-Series is a bit small for my liking.

At first glance i thought it looked like a new TL from the front, even the interior (mainly just the steering wheel) has an Acura feel to it no?

They had it on display here a couple months ago at CU-ICAR which I believe was part of the project with BMW on building this... Pretty cool vehicle and I can definitely see a lot of police agencies jumping at this..

Another of the projects here that is pretty cool..

Two-stage Turborecovery of Exhaust Waste Energy

Principal investigators:
Steve Hung and Beshah Ayalew

Graduate student:
Chia-Sheng (“Jason”) Lai

Sponsor:
Internal startup funds

Brief abstract:
Exhaust waste energy recovery methods to date suffer from poor recovery performance at low engine loads and corresponding low exhaust gas flows. This research effort explores the potential of applying the improved low-flow energy recovery behavior of two-stage turbocharger turbine (input) sections to the driving of generators or hydraulic pumps for energy reuse.

Impact:
Potential 7 percent to 10 percent improvement in fuel economy for vehicles powered by gasoline/diesel internal combustion engines.

There is a LOT of diesel and turbocharger work going on and you're going to see this technology in more and more cars because of the emissions & fuel economy standards set out by Obama.
Project schedule:
Simulation results by spring 2009. Bench-level/test cell system test results by spring 2010 and vehicle-level results by fall 2010.
