hey guys im pretty new to beyond but i have to say its an all around great site, now i figure i might as well try and contribute. I've been looking alot at the new sti and its such an interesting car; we can all agree its not exactly pretty but im quite a big fan of it. im not sure how well this is going to be taken but IMO i think it looks way better without the spoiler on the back.

My take is your take needs to be more than just a comment on the rear spoiler to make it worthy of a thread.

+1 for ban.
New STI's are ugly, but still totally functional and awesome.. unlike this thread.

Excellent first post. Very thought-provoking. Well written and extremely insightful. I can only hope for similar repeat postings to come....

However, while on the topic, I think the new WRX/STi look is much nicer than the old rally car look. Of course, the original appearance is what drew some people to the car with the performance of a rally car in mind. But to me, they were just plain ugly.

With that said, they certainly were not mainstream when they came out. Now that they are somewhat, I think they've lost some of their identity.

Still, of course, a formidable vehicle. Its just a shame they didn't boost the STi performance a little more to make the higher pricetag more worthwhile over the WRX.

I saw about 3 new STi's tonight, and I think they look really good. Gold rims make the STi.

I believe there will be a STI w/5-speed automatic available for 2010. It's the 5-speed auto from the Legacy and not a twin clutch unit such as the DSG or TC-SST which is disappointing.

My take is that Subaru owners prefer EVO's lol. Take a look at the used car inventory at South Coast Mitsubishi (supposedly biggest seller of EVO's in the US). Every single WRX/STI was traded in on an EVO X lol.

Can't say I blame them, if I had to trade in mine for the 08+ Evo or STi, I'd most likely take the Evo.

I had to choose between a WRB sedan wrx265 or a dark grey hb wrx265, went for the later one.

I was torn between a wrx265 or an evo x, went for the subaru simply because of bigger trunk space

I would purchase my wife the 09 STI and we seriously considered it this year. It's practical, fun, safe, speedy, and relatively inexpensive. However, we don't want to deal with car payments right now - so she will just have to wait. :)

I guess you are right. A Mitsubishi dealership in California (a state where Subaru's don't sell well) bought up as many used WRX's as possible because during a recession where nobody is buying cars it's a perfect time to have a massive inventory of non-fuel efficient niche cars.

Funny that in that same automotive market they are selling enough lancers to keep a full inventory of wrx trade-ins.

I believe it's you commenting on a subject you know nothing of. Pretty expensive ploy in a recession to bring in (29) used WRX/STI's. Southcoast is the largest Mitsubishi dealership in the entire US. They pretty well move all the EVO's in California since they can sell at lower prices due to their inventory. Take a look at their inventory of used cars by brand and then notice that they have a ton of used Subarus compared to other brands.

http://www.southcoastmitsubishi.com/Preowned-Inventory.aspx#page=preowned-inventory&pagesize=25&ajax_t=1243993040517&sortdirection=True&make=Subaru&sortitem=-2147483648&numberofvisiblepages=10&virtualpageindex=0&currentpage=1&totalrecords=31&hyperlinkargument=page

That's not because they go to auctions looking for WRX's it's because they can offer pricing on new EVO X's that no other dealerships in the country can. Most EVO X buyers are either EVO IX/VIII owners or Subaru owners that's the way it is. You would be surprised how many former Subaru owners have traded in their STI's for EVO X's and joined evolutionm.net. Hell there are threads at NASIOC titled '08 STI or 08 EVO X' and you would be surprised that it's a 50/50 split on a Subaru forum. Not shitting on the STI because I think it's a good car but it doesn't handle remotely close to an EVO. Drive both and try to tell me otherwise.

Absolutely 100% truth. The new Evo would eat a new STI around any racetrack, anywhere.

We bought our STi because it was (quite a bit) cheaper, has a ton of room for a family (hatch) and is 90% as fast. If you want the king, you need an EVO.

I almost bought an STI because at the time they were cheaper and I actually like them quite a bit as well the interior isn't as drab and to me it felt slightly quicker off the line. IMO if you are coming from a car with a stock suspension setup the STI will be a better car for you but if you are used to lowered cars with no body roll you will appreciate the EVO's ride more. I absolutely love the TC-SST though. I still haven't had any remorse of not having a stick for the first time in almost 15 years.

Reviews are everywhere from what I remember. STI better in some, EVO X better in others.
The first part of the video really wasn't fair they were comparing a STI to the special edition FQ-400.

In the last part they were compaing the normal sti to normal evo x, now thats a more fair comparison. It looked like the evox had a bad start though.

Perfect Dark

The STi is more practical, the Evo is more fun...it all comes down to what a person is looking for.

To me the Evo would have been a much easier car to look at if it had more than 4 cubic inches of trunk space and if the price point was a bit lower. Everything else about the car I love.

That's because it's an MR. The TC-SST prevents you getting a good launch. I will say though that launch was especially poor looking. Even a stock GSR is limited to a 5000 RPM launch while you can run the STI to redline and drop the clutch.

That's what I was thinking but I wasn't sure because both the evo x had the Canadian GSR wheels. I wasn't sure which specs got which wheels in europe.

So with that being said, if they did the test by a few laps, I wonder what the outcome would be:thumbsup:

In this road and track comparison the STI was slower then the GSR by 1.6 sec, and slower then the MR by 2.5 seconds.

It's weird how the comparisons are everywhere.

I believe the top gear comparison was one of the few that ever had the STI faster but their launch was so poor you can argue that the comparison was lost right there. There's not a single US publication that's ever tested the STI faster than the EVO X around a track.

Yes but, Americans don't know how to drive, Euro's do ;) Haha j/k

Honestly I think both cars are quite amazing. I, personally, am not a fan of the new STi and how it only comes in the hatch version, had it come in the sedan I think it would have eliminated tons of body roll and been a much tighter car. I'm not saying I don't like the hatch, because I do because it's insanely practical and still looks good... better than mazda 3's, etc ;), just not for the STi though (or at the very least, have a sedan option)

That being said, with the 2010 models, why hasn't subaru followed suit for the last few gens and changed the looks every 2 years?

Yep. Suspension is really the only weak point on the car. Lowered with stiffer springs should be a capable little hatch.

Although the WRX StI lives up to the hype in terms of performance. The thing is ugly on the outside and unrefined on the inside. Yes I know that this is a rally car, but it is still a car with a price tag of 45000 (Tech package). At that price the least they could do is provide a nav which doesnt look like its bought at future shop and pay a little bit more attention to the interior.

Love the engine, love the performance, love the AWD. HATE the rest.

Is the performance and lack of everything else, worth this price tag?
